Szakáll Sándor - Jánosi Melinda: Minerals of Hungary (Topographia Mineralogica Hungariae 4. Miskolc, 1996)

Mineralogy and descriptive and topographical mineralogy in particular lost positions in Hungary. Few representatives of the middle and the young generation took up topographical mineralogy: prominents among them are János Kiss and Béla Nagy. The completion of Koch's monograph re-edited by József Mezősi (KOCFI, 1985) with new localities and species, its increase in bulk is to be attributed primarily to raw material prospecting. The complex prospecting activity lead by the Hungarian Geological Survey and the professional instrumental background at universities and other research institutes brought many valuable findings in mineralogy (György Bárdossy, Via Fazekas, Gyula Grasselly, János Kiss, László Kulcsár, Béla Nagy, Ernő Nemecz, György Pantó, István Viczián, and János Vincze). As a result we know an increased number of localities and the number of known mineralogical species now totals about 240 subtracting invalid and uncertain species (Fig. 12). 5. The last decade (1985-) In the mid 80s several research centres — Eötvös Loránd University, Herman Ottó Museum, Hungarian Natural History Museum — saw an increased interest for research in topographical mineralogy. Data collection sponsored by the Central Office for Geology started under the auspices of Eötvös Loránd University with the participation of the majority of geological research centres. This programme for a Mineralogical Encyclopaedia of Hungary had to be interrupted in 1991. From the data however two volumes in manuscript came to be completed, one on native elements and sulphides (PAPP & WEISZBURG, 1986), the other on oxides and hydroxides (MOLNÁR & PAPP, 1990). These two works are all the more important because they expound critically all their information. This information is available via the HUNGAMIN computer data base. Simultaneously under the auspices of Herman Ottó Museum another computer data base (HUMINCOL) was created where silicates and carbonates excepted the data of all significant mineral specimens
