Szakáll Sándor - Jánosi Melinda: Minerals of Hungary (Topographia Mineralogica Hungariae 4. Miskolc, 1996)

originating from Hungary in Hungarian public collections are amply documented. The new findings of the new decade inspired a volume on Hungarian mineral species (SZAKÁLL & GATTER, 1993) which after a short historical and genetical survey describes 366 species (Fig. 12). 450 ..V • • • ; • V • • • • • • • • : • • v.v : :. : .v. ; • 420 , 1927 1966 1985 1993 1996 Fig. 12 The increase of number of known mineral species in Hungary between 1927-1996 At present the number of known mineral species is Hungary is about 420, showing considerable increase compared to 1985 and even 1993. This gain is to be attributed to a new factor: in this period not only geological and petrological studies produced valuable mineralogical information, but at the above mentioned research centres systematic mineralogical-topographical investigations took place. Another novelty is that not only the modern equipment of the research centres is employed, but the best of mineral collectors joined hands with scientists in the field work. Herman Ottó Museum organized a so called territorial supervision: in all mountain regions collectors supervise the explorations. 4-6 field camping periods are organized per annum for the mineralogical mapping of one region after the other.
