PAGE 8 William Penn July 15, 1964 LINCOLN AND THE HUNGARIANS and many others as high ranking officers. Among the fallen were two nephewg of Kossuth, sons of his sisters. It was possible that two modest Hungarians received the republic’s highest decoration for heroism during the Civil War: Major General Julius Stahel- Számvald and Sergeant Leopold KÄRPELES. (According to the official records, Karpeles was born in Hungary. He was color bearer and sergeant of the 57th Massachusetts Infantry, and distinguished himself in the battle of the Wilderness, May 6, 1864.) It was also possible that General Stahel-Számvald became one of Abraham Lincoln’s most trusted friends. He headed the five member military entourage which accompanied the President to Gettysburg and sitting on the platform when Lincoln delivered his famous speech, he was possibly the only Hungarian who heard the speech delivered by the President. It was possible that thousands of Hungarian soldiers served in the armed forces in all the wars of the United States, hundreds of them giving their lives for their country. It was possible that many hundreds of Hungarian authors, scientists, inventors, artists, professors gave their best talents to help maintain the United States as the best hope of the world. It was possible for about a million Hungarians to find in the United States a new country, new livelihood, new homes and a better future for themselves and their descendants. N It was possible for them to organize and maintain a distinct Hungarian community in this great melting pot of nations without being accused of disloyalty to the democratic ideas and laws of the land. It was possible to publish hundreds of newspapers, magazines and books in their own language. It was possible to build up mighty fraternal association of Hungarians, among them the William Penn Fraternal Association being the oldest and largest. It was possible for the Hungarians to organize hundreds of congregations, according to their own faith and use their mother tongue in their churches and to teach their children without interference from anyone. It was possible to give the world an everlasting example how a mighty nation should treat its minority groups. In an age when the whole world is struggling with seemingly insoluble problems and difficulties, the American example should be held up high: in this land of unlimited possibilities it is possible for millions of people to live a free, harmonious and happy life. Truly, the American idea is the best hope of the world. We, Hungarians know it. And the possibilities for this idea are still unlimited throughout the entire world. Being partakers of all this, we should unceasingly proclaim to the world the gospel of America. + Always there... with your help YOUR RED CROSS THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE WILLIAM PENN FRATERNAL ASSOCIATION announces with profound sorrow the death of Mrs. Arthur Uto nee Rose Nadas Branch 45 — May 24, 1964 an ILLUSTRIOUS MEMBER of this Association.
