AND ENJOY YOUR FRATERNAL REUNION April 18, 1956 William Penn PAGE 13 WORKING HARD FOR SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT Immediately after the Board of Directors approves the Tournament- Fellowship Days city recommended by the National Tournament Execut­ive Committee, the latter body en­lists the active cooperation of the branches, branch officers and mem­bers of that locality, in order to prepare properly for the yearly sports-social rally and to assure its ultimate success. Our Buffalo and area William Penn membership is giving its en­thusiastic support to guarantee an­other such event, the 13th Annual The Fortieth Anniversary of Branch 296 was observed at a ban­quet on Sunday, April 8th, at 6:00 P.M., at the branch home on Walter Lane, Springdale. In order to acquaint our new mem­bers and to permit the “old timers” to reminisce, the following highlights of our branch history should be of interest: Branch 296 was organized on National William Penn Bowling Tournament and National Fellow­ship Days, superlative results on May 12-13, 1956 in Buffalo, New York. The twenty-three charter members who were instrumental in this important fact were: Frank Simon, Benjamin Lajos, Daniel Diószegi, John Garda, M rs. Wililam Varga, Esther Kozma (Mrs. Nick Nyardy), Joseph Nagy, Stephen Bayer, Alex Bodo, Alex Beck, Gabriel Bihary, Andrew Bihary, Louis Peterman, Joseph Fintor, Ste­phen Jeney, William Toth, David Depew, N. Y.; Joseph S. Taylor, President of Branch V-383, Buffalo, N.Y.; Kalman J. Erdeky, District Manager, Branch V-383. Young, Controller of Branch V-383. Jeney, James Diószegi, Joseph Kiss, Nickolas Diószegi, Alex Gacsalyi and John Harsacky. The first branch officers were: Frank Simon, president; Alex Ga­csalyi, vice president; Stephen Jeney, secretary; Benjamin Lajos, treasurer; Daniel Diószegi, controller. Auditors were: David Jeney, Alex Bodo and Louis Peterman. Of the twenty-three charter mem­bers, there now remain only three living members: Joseph Fintor and Mrs. Nicholas Nyardy, of Spring­­dale, and John Harsacky of Cort­land, N. Y. One year later, March 1917, the first American flag was dedicated. Mr. and Mrs. James Diószegi acted as sponsors on this occasion. The mourning colors for the flag were donated by Emery Zosza. In 1925 a Juvenile Order at the branch was established with 26 young members. The Tenth Anniversary was ob­served in 1926. In 1929 the second American flag was dedicated on May 30th. Sponsors were Mr. nad Mrs. Balint Veres. The mourning colors were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mester. In 1931 the first of the Verhovay baseball teams were organized. The branch’s baseball teams became well­­known throughout the Allegheny Valley for their playing ability and the number of trophies and awards won. Ttja Twentieth Anniversary was observed in 1936. In 1939 three members, William Blizman, Mrs. George Bauman and Mrs. Joihn Palmer, received citations for their outstanding work in ob­taining new members during the membership drive. The citation of "Acknowledged Member” was award­ed to them by the Board of Direc­tors in September, 1939. The remaining history of the branch will be continued next month. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tarpay on the birth of a son ... to Mr. and Mrs Alex Üveges on the birth of a son also, this is their first. Mrs. Nick Nyarday was a patient in Allegheny Valley Hospital... Helen Van Tine is recuperating from an appendectomy performed in Ci­tizens General Hospital. The Verhovay bowling team rolled a 1057 for high single game for the season in the Monday night Fra­ternal League. Events at the Cleveland Hungarian Home MARCH 7 A very successful card party was held which fulfilled the purpose of aggrandizing the Burial Fund. Va­luable door prizes and other prizes were given. Refreshments were served. Branch 14 wishes to thank all those who donated the prizes, worked in the kitchen or assisted in any way to assure the fruitful re­sults of this social. MARCH 10 By decision of the Home Office, a meeting of great importance was held in the Hungarian Home’s large auditorium. This was followed by a banquet. MARCH 17 The Sports Club held its get-to­gether. Card teafms played against one another and there were many prizes offeréd. Hungarian singing, to the accompaniment of the non- Hungarian mandolin, was enjoyed. The happy affair lasted until 2:00 A.M. Many thanks to all those who helped make the event a successful one. MARCH 18 National President Coloman Ré­vész and Director Dr. Andrew Ko­vács were present at the elections of Branch 573, Cleveland, Ohio. Election results were: Stephen Szappanos, president; Dr. Alexander Tihany, treasurer; Stephen Otto, re­creation chairman; Alexander Eitner I and Victor Falk, auditing committee­man. District Manager Coloman Ber­talan is manager of Branch 573. It is hoped that every other month of the year will be as actively and successfully spent as was March of 1956. The Cleveland Hungarian Home is the nucleus of our mem­bership activities and functions.
