\ MANY INTERESTING SIGHTS: SEE THE PAGE 14 William Penn April 18, 1956 Verhovay Watchtower I By JOSEPH J. HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio J MOTOR CITY MEWS BRANCH 36 — DETROIT, MICHIGAN By Jolán Lucas It is with deep humility that I ask again for the support of our members in Cuyahoga County on behalf of my reelection as State Representative to the General Assembly of Ohio. I am thankful to you. In return, I assure you of my continued honest and sincere public service in your interest in particular, and in the interest of the people of Ohio in general. Your past support is appreciated by me. Your backing of me at the Primary Elections on Tuesday, May 8, 1956, shall be remembered in thought and in deed. MR. HORVATH I sponsored and cosponsored thirteen bills in the House of Representatives. Six of these bills became laws. My record on labor legislation has been 100%. I voted in favor of the Credit Union Bill, the’ Pension Bill, the Workmen’s Compensation and Unemployment increases. My attendance record has been 98%. I was present to vote on all important legislation. I sincerely believe that my record as a public servant has been good, and for that reason alone, I solicit your vote. Again, many thanks from me to you. We hear that Branch 45 will send a team to the Buffalo bowling tourney... We hear that a team, composed of George Kontur, Mike Kontur, Joseph Semetko, Joseph Kadar, Frank Oravis, Ted Beres, is ready and looking forward to William Penn’s big bowling spectacle. The Verhovay Sports Club card party was well attended, and, as usual, the affair was a successful one. Our new manager of Branch 14, District Manager Louis F. Kostley, was present. He is an excellent social mixer who befriends everyone. We saw Mi’s. Mary Matusz and Mrs. Ehasz who, with three other women, were playing bunco. Joseph M. Toth, Steve Vache and John Bosway were playing sixty-six, while others were playing poker, etc. Bela Kastan and Ted Beres were tending bar. Cake and coffee were served by our club femininity — Ann Pinter, Helen Oravis, Betty Knapp, Frances Beres, Melvina Hegedűs. Mrs. Joseph Bodnar donated three prizes, as did Joseph Semetko. The Torda’s, Louis, Joe and Louise, wen about three prizes. Another winner was Dorothy Kastan. We saw several Branch 366 members, among them Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Marson, John Beres and Andy Bakos. Entertainment was provided by Coloman Fuzy, manager, on his mandolin, and vocal numbers were done by Frank Oravis, Anthony Pinter, Jimmy Bodnar and Betty Knapp. John D’Aprano was a guest. In ending this rhapsodical paragraph, I reiterate: A pleasant time was in evidence for all at this St. Patrick’s Day card party. Denis Szász, secretary of Branch 62-R, is helping me in my campaign for reelection. We saw Joseph Barry at the Verhovay hall on March 20th. He is controller of Branch 45, West Side. It is our understanding that Nick Yuhasz, senior and junior, left town —either Florida or California. We are wondering where Branch 45 will build? Joe Szabó is about to move to the Lee Road section of Cleveland — the new mortgage heights. The Matyas girls "have bought a ( restaurant in downtown Cleveland, at 1216 Prospect, next to the Carter Hotel. Their mother will be chief cook. We saw Jake and Terry Torda at bowling night for Branch 366; also Eddie and Katherine Torda, Jacob Torda, the Matula’s and many others, including new faces. We were happy to see Helen Vestrocy of Branch 39-V in the news. Helen: brought back the past — the period shortly after the English Section of our official organ became a Separate issue, the Verhovay Journal, in its own right. I enjoyed the lively columns of charming Helen Vestrocy. Joseph Nagy, Branch 366, tells us that a former secretary of Branch 366, Frances Schwartz* now married, has two children and lives in the Lee-Harvard section. It seems that almost enough members live there to start a new William Penn branch. We are sure that John J. Balazs will line up the St. Clair avenue Hungarians to bolster the reelection chances of Joseph J. Horvath, State Representative, in the primary of May 8th. Anyone who lives in Cuyahoga county may vote for this office, so please keep in mind. My best wishes to the bowlers in the Buffalo Tournament. May your scores be large, your splits few, and, ABOVE ALL, be real sports. Have a good time and MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL. Ex animo, JOSEPH J.'HORVATH c. o. This will be short and sweet. Because of an unforeseen series of events and circumstances in late February and March, your Ferret was unable to write the usual article. The stuff was written and just needed a little polishing, and then it all happened: Lou’s Leap Year birthday party on March 3 with nearly a hundred guests — an additional 35 or so on Sunday, March 4 (making me miss the March meeting’) — and then laryngitis, bronchial pneumonia, streptococcal throats and flu for all four of us getting ready for Larry’s Senior Trip tour to Washington, D. C. and New York City — Easter and bang! Over a month gone without finishing my article. Now too, it will be very short as the deadline is hovering over my head. The most important branch business was the original planning of the 50th Jubilee Celebration of Branch 36. A gala banquet and dance will be held on Saturday evening, at 6 p. m., on October 13, 1956, at the Hungarian Reformed Church Sick Benefit January, 1956 (Continued from page 12) 4L R. A surprise party was given by several groups for District Manager and Mrs. Stephen Lukacs in March. Luke and I were invited but that was the Sunday I had laryngitis and couldn’t say a word. Can you imagine a silent Ferret?! Full details of the gala party for Mr. and Mrs. Lukacs will appear in my next column. Watch for a full column in April — it’s nearly ready to go now. There will be information concerning the developments in the Sub-Teen and Teen-Age clubs. Also, information will be given on the progress of the House Committee for the selection of new headquarters for the William Penn Fraternal Association in the Detroit area.
