Branch News WPA Vice Chair of the Board Anne Marie Schmidt and husband Mark Schmidt a Branch 249 auditor, deliver food donated by the branch as part ofWPA's Join Hands Against Hunger campaign. our stay at the famous Dearborn Inn near the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich. Branch 249 participated in WPA's Join Hands Against Hunger campaign again this year, donating nearly 140 pounds of food to The Foodbank. For 40 years, The Foodbank has served as the primary source of food for the hunger relief network in the Miami Valley. The Foodbank provides the infrastructure to distribute to more than 100 food pantries, community kitchens, and shelters. These in turn give food to more than 70,000 different people yearly. That's food to nearly 1 in 10 people in this area that have low food security; or in other words, may not know where their next meal will come from. I am truly proud that WPA supports this effort to help those less fortunate. Don't forget to go to the WPA Bowling Tournament in Washington, Pa. on April 28 and 29.1 hope to see a large group of members from Dayton participating. Don't forget to bring your lucky charms as the bowling is held at the Meadows Racetrack & Casino where you can try your luck after the bowling and banquet. This is a really fun fraternal activity that you should try. Locally, the Magyar Club of Dayton will host its annual spring dance at the American Czechoslovakian Club on Saturday, April 29, at 6:00 p.m. Dinner is available before the music of George Bátyi and the Gypsy Strings plays away the evening. Cost is $15 for club members, $20 for non-members. For reservations call Michele Daley-LaFlame at 937-771- 0404 or Gail Robison at 937-836-2549. Make it a totally Hungarian weekend by joining Branch 249 at its annual Hungarian Day with Dayton Dragons baseball on Sunday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. The day will include food and drinks as we watch another professional sports record-breaking sell-out game at 5/3 Field. We will have a luxury suite in the upper deck to watch the game in climate controlled comfort or brave any elements in the included box seats. Cost is $15 for local branch members, $25 for guests. Call Mark Schmidt at 937-667-1211 for reservations soon since these tickets go fast. Our next branch meeting will be held Saturday, April 8, at 1:00 p.m. at McAuley Hall at Queen of Martyrs Church off North Dixie Highway, close to the traffic circle. Hope to see you there. Flappy birthday to those celebrating this month, and a happy anniversary to those married in March. We wish you many more. Get well wishes to those hospitalized or ill, especially Branch President Michele Daley-LaFlame, Jesse Stefanies and Dennis White, husband of member Karen Vance. We extend our sincere sympathy to those who have lost a loved one. You are in our prayers. Don't forget Daylight Saving Time begins on March 12 and spring-glorious spring—starts March 20. That's all for now. Until next month, stay dry and warm. Branch 296 Springdale, PA by Mary Ann Kelly-Lovasz We enter the month of March constantly wondering how the weather will unfold each day. March typically enters like a lion and leaves like a lamb. We shall see. The vernal equinox (hello, springtime!) occurs on March 20. Have you noticed and enjoyed the increased amount of daylight that we've been having? Hungarians celebrate March 15 as a national holiday, commemorating the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. If you are of this ancestry, then you should find a special source of pride in this patriotic day. This month, Branch 296 will end its winter hiatus and return to our regular meetings. As part of WPA's Join Hands Against Hunger campaign, we kindly ask our members to bring canned goods or nonperishable items to our next branch meeting March 9. These items will be donated to a local food pantry. Generally speaking, pantry donations are most plentiful at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but decrease at the end of the holidays. Hunger never takes a holiday, and your thoughtful donation will make a huge difference in a person's or a family's well-being. Thank you so much, in advance! We extend get well wishes to Tom "Bongo Tommy" Kerek, who recently took a nasty spill on his bicycle. Tom, I saw the photo that you sent and, really man, we cannot print that in living color! That was a serious fall, Tom, and we're hoping that you are back to your regular self soon, playing your bongos. We also wish a speedy recovery to all of our Branch 296 members who are ailing. Happy March birthday greetings and wishes for many more to our members, including branch auditor John Torma. Heartfelt condolences to those who have recently lost a loved one. As stated, we'll return to our regular branch meetings, beginning Thursday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. at King's Family Restaurant, New Kensington. Dates for future meetings are April 6 and May 11. We hope to see you and any food dona-26 0 March 2017 0 WILLIAM PENN LIFE
