Branch News This composite of the founding members of branch 189 Alliance, Ohio, stands as a testament to the branch's long, proud history of service to its members and our Hungarian heritage. Branch 132 South Bend, IN by John E. Burns Happy (belated) Anniversary, WPA! 131 years and counting! It appears that spring is starting early this year. We have experienced very mild temperatures, and rainnot snow-has been the most common weather pattern. But, things can change in an instant this time of year. Branch 132 made a $50 donation to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana in January. This donation was for the Join Hands Against Hunger campaign for 2017. The next Branch 132 meeting will be held on March 7 at the Martin's Supermarket Deli (first floor) on Ireland Road at 6:00 p.m. Branch 189 ______Alliance, OH______ by Teresa Phillips Hallo from WPA Branch 189 in Alliance, Ohio. Members and guests gathered Dec. 31 for our annual New Year's Eve party. Music, dancing and great food was enjoyed by all. An article published in our local newspaper many years ago announced that Hungarians in Alliance were going to construct a two-story building with a basement measuring 100 feet by 40 feet as a way to counteract the "saloon element." Heading the effort was the Rev. A. Harsanyi, pastor of the Hungarian church. Others on the committee were John Korosy, Joe Sepsi, Mike Bileze, Mike Fabian, George Bulough, John Nagy and Joe Bathort. More than 100 years later, our branch is still up and running. We are excited to be a part of this history. We have started some early spring cleaning. All unused items were donated to the Alliance Children's and Family Services. We also raffled off a Valentine's basket, with all proceeds donated to the local food pantry. Belated February birthday wishes go out to several members and friends of our branch: Jen Polverine, Jay Thompson, Jim Stuchell, Rose Jackson, Jim Hall, Terry Court and Elsie Welch. Wedding wishes go out to Jim and Sharon Croteau. We are happy to announce that we recently welcomed 12 new members. Any ideas and contributions are always welcome. Let's keep Branch 189 active and successful. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Judit Ganchuk Spring begins March 20--are you counting down the days? Happy birthday wishes to all our members sharing their special day this month. We extend our sympathies to members and families who have lost a loved one. It is never easy to lose someone dear. We are thinking of and sending warm thoughts to Branch 226 member Sally Petras, former branch auditor. We ask branch members to attend our next meeting. Remember, our meeting time has changed. It will be the third Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at Branch President Malvene Heyz's home. Please call 412-751-1898 if the weather is bad: better safe than sorry! March 15 marks the 169th anniversary of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution against the Austrian monarchy. Hungarian-Americans share in these somber commemorations to remember the past and to honor those who lost their lives. We're looking forward to the annual bowling tournament in Washington, Pa., at the Meadows Racetrack & Casino! Please call us with news you want to share. We want to spread the good news and cheer other members up in this frigid weather. Until then, stay warm and cozy! Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Mark Schmidt Is this really winter? We've had temperatures in the 50s and very little snow. Boy, I hope I didn't jinx this area into bad weather and March coming in like a lion. But, what will really "roar" is this year's local events. The White Rose Ball was as spectacular as ever. All the debutantes were so beautiful and their escorts were dashing as they danced the palotás. The Hungarian Arts Club does a wonderful job organizing the ball, and we thoroughly enjoyed WILLIAM PENN LIFE 0 March 2017 0 25
