Summer is the busiest time of the year for vacations in Hungary. Many escape the sweltering heat of Budapest by taking a short ride to the Balaton area, where a university town steeped in tradition and architecture becomes our puzzle topic for June.

The Helikon Castle Museum in Keszthely, Zala Megye is one of the most visited destinations in Hungary. This Baroque-style castle offers visitors a panoramic view of the town and Lake Balaton. The Festetics Palace is the centerpiece of a huge complex founded in 1739.

For 11 generations, the Festetics family lived and prospered on this huge estate. Originally from Croatia, they became an influential family during the reign of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire. Several members of the family were prominent politicians, with one being a personal advisor to Hungarian Queen Maria Theresa. Another member of the family, George I, founded the first agricultural college in Europe, Georgikon, founded in I 797.

The main building, which served as the family home until 1944, contains over 100 lavishly decorated rooms. Several other structures are now world-class museums in their own right. The library houses the largest and most important private collection in Europe and contains many compositions of Joseph Haydn. The Coach Museum houses over 50 unique coaches, including the original coach owned by Archduke Ferdinand. The Model Train Museum has nearly 1000 feet of track. The Hunting Museum contains hundreds of animals from five continents and is dedicated to the famous Magyar hunters of the past. The Palm House is the estate greenhouse and was built by Gustave Eiffel in 1880. It is home to over 200 hybrid plants only grown at this location plus thousands more from across the globe.

For history buffs who want to spend more than a day exploring, there’s a five-star hotel and several quality restaurants and coffee houses located within the complex. The summer is a very busy time at the estate with many musical events taking place in the Concert Hall and White Mirror Room or outside on the palatial grounds.
