Branch News Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 248 Monaville, WV Branch 349 Weirton, WV Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH by Joyce Nicholson Hello from the WPA branches from Barton, Martins Ferry, Weirton, Steubenville and Monaville! Our branches participated in an outing on Sunday, March 30, to the Wheeling Nailers Hockey game. Great game! The Nailers won 5-1 over the Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The small group that attended had a fun time. The Nailers are an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadians. It was great to see so many people in attendance at the WPA Annual Bowling Tournament this year. As always, the event was wonderful, offering lots of good conversation, fun and food. Did you know Hungarian inventor, architect and professor Ernő Rubik is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his famed toy, Rubik's Cube, this year? Invented in 1974, Rubik's Cube was an immediate success when it was first exported from Hungary in 1980, and became the world's fastest-selling toy. To celebrate the milestone, the 69-year-old Hungarian inventor has paired with Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J., for a special exhibition of the toy. The exhibition explores everything from the beginnings of the cube as a toy made out of wood and rubber bands, up to the world's most expensive Rubik's Cube ever made, an 18-karat gold cube set with diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires and amethysts, estimated to be worth $2.5 million. We want to wish a happy birthday and happy anniversary to those members with birthdays and anniversaries this month. A date to remember Deadline for submissions to our magazine is the 10th day of each month. If you have any questions, please contact John E. Lovász tollfree at 1-800-848-7366, ext. 135. For information about branch activities please call Joyce Nicholson at 740-264-6238. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH by Richard E. Sarosi It is hard to believe June is here already, and summer activities are about to begin. Best wishes to you and yours for a blessed Flag Day; remember our nation, troops and veterans. Say a prayer for our troops, especially those on active duty and in harm's way. Happy Father's Day to my dad and to all WPA dads! Emery Marcus, an instructor at the WPA Hungarian Heritage Experience, recently spoke at the Hungarian Genealogy Society of Greater Cleveland meeting. His topic was: "From Attila to Arpad—A New Look at Early Hungarian History." It was a very interesting and informative presentation and was well attended with some former language camp students among those attending. It was good to see our members and staff enjoying themselves and impressing us with their bowling skills during the WPA tournament May 3 at the Meadows Race Track & Casino. Many bowlers left with sore hands and backs. But, everyone enjoyed the delicious barbeque which took place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. We salute our fabulous Home Office staff for their hard work in making this event a success. We even had some great bowlers from the Home Office! Once again, the generosity of our members who provided donations for the Scholarship Foundation helped to increase funding for our student scholarships. One of our scholarship recipients participated this year. We hope to see more scholarship winners next year. (Are there any student golfers?) Be sure to mark your calendars for bowling in 2015 so that you can take part in a fun fraternal event. We want to see a continued increase in bowlers for next year. Please remember those who are less fortunate or experiencing hard times by donating canned goods, non-perishable items or simple personal items to your local food banks and hunger centers. Buy a few extra food items when you shop and take them to a local food center. No matter how big or small the gift, it makes a difference. Speaking of making a difference in someone's life, pick up the phone and make a call to a friend, family member, former co-worker or someone who you have been out of touch with. Just say: "Hello. How are you doing? I was thinking about you." It is time to wear your "crown of communication." It can make someone's day by letting them know you care and that they are in your thoughts. When they are gone, you won't have that opportunity to ever make that call. This was part of a eulogy at a former colleague's funeral that I attended recently. Now is the time to start making those calls. Mark your calendars for WPA events taking place in 2014. This issue of William Penn Life has information and registration forms for many of the events listed below. • June 7 - Hungarian Heritage Night with the Lake Erie Captains in Eastlake, Ohio. Contact Branch Coordinator Violet Sarosi at 1-440- 248-9012. Tickets are limited; first come, first served. • July 18-19 - 31st Annual WPA 20 0 June 2014 0 William Penn Life
