For Starters NFCA to rebrand organization as the ‘American Fraternal Alliance’ OAK BROOK, IL - Delegates of the 124th Annual Meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) voted unanimously to adopt a new name for the organization—the American Fraternal Alliance. The vote was held during the Closing General Session at the NFCA's meeting in Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 11. The change is scheduled to become effective Jan. 1, 2011. "We believe that the American Fraternal Alliance name can help us build a stronger and more respected brand with our key audience of public policymakers, where we would be known as the 'fraternal alliance' rather than as a set of initials," said Teresa J. Rasmussen, Immediate Past Chair of the NFCA Board of Directors. "Most importantly, we believe that now is the right time to make this change." "The new name does not change who we are and what we do," said NFCA President and CEO Joseph J. Annotti. "After all, it's what's under the hood —not the hood ornament-that's important." The new name will allow the fraternal alliance "to create a brand awareness for the fraternal system that does not currently exist," Annotti said. "Our challenge is to make sure our new name carries with it the brand identity that says fraternals are credible, trustworthy and relevant financial services providers, and that our nonprofit, mutual aid charter delivers a valuable and irreplaceable return on investment to taxpayers through our charitable and volunteer activities, and by building social capital that strengthens communities across the country." □ Celebrating the successful end to the recent Home Office challenge are (front, l-r) Ronda Grote fend and Denise Hurley and (standing, l-r) Dora McKinsey, National V.P.Treasurer Diane M Torma, Vice Chairman of the Board E. E. (AI) Vargo, Judy Chakey, Janell Butorac and Steve Evans. WPA employees rise to the challenge PITTSBURGfT — As you were getting dressed this morning, did you stop to think about the socks and underwear you were putting on? Most likely, no. But, to a homeless or poor person, clean socks and underwear are never taken for granted. Providing such a simple, overlooked necessity can make a world of difference to those in need. That's why WPA-at the suggestion of Vice Chairman of the Board E. E. (Al) Vargo-recently challenged the various departments at the Home Office to see which department could collect the most new socks and underwear for those served by the Atlantic City (N.J.) Rescue Mission. On Sept. 21, National President George S. Charles Jr. proudly announced that his own department was the recipient of the first-ever "Sock It to Me Award," beating out the Treasury and Secretary's departments. All told, our Home Office employees donated 671 items, which Mr. Vargo will deliver to the Mission next month. The Atlantic City Rescue Mission (ACRM) was founded in 1964, providing hot food and shelter to a few homeless men from a small storefront in Atlantic City. Since that time, the Mission has added and expanded programs in response to the growing and changing needs of the people it serves. Today, ACRM helps more than 3,300 homeless and working poor people per year and is the largest provider of comprehensive services to about 20 percent of New Jersey's homeless population. In 2008, it served more than 260,000 meals in its dining hall, served another 100,000 meals in food baskets and provided a bed to about 270 people per night.
