Branch 51 Passaic, NJ by Martha Barillo Yes, there is a God. Yes, there are miracles. Saturday, Sept. 11, was a magical day for us. Our two daughters and their families surprised us and took us to the WPA Picnic-A Great Fraternal Fest. This was the first time they came to the picnic. That was the first miracle. The second miracle was my grandson Jay sen Smith winning the fishing contest held at the picnic. His cousin Zachary O'Neill baited the hook for him, and his cousin Caroline O'Neill took the fishes off the hook for him. You see, Jaysen never fished before. We bought about $80 worth of tickets for the Chinese auction. As we were putting tickets in the prize bags, I was showing the oil painting I donated as a prize to someone. I jokingly told her to put a ticket in the bag for the painting, saying we might win it back. Guess what? We did. Miracle three. The whole day was a miracle: all the people who came; all the people who worked. The band was great, and the food was really, really good. My family enjoyed it so much they were talking about coming again next year. The next miracle? God bless Endre Csornán and all the volunteers who worked so hard. To all those who gave the WPA magazine a new life, I love it. I admit I'm prejudice. I prefer color to black and white. Even the quality of the paper is better, and the articles are more interesting. We have known August Molnár for years and years. He is like a grandfather to us. I loved the article on the Hungarian Room and the many other interesting articles. I have been a member of the Association since 1948, and my dad was a member since they opened an office in Passaic. I remember the banquet celebrating the merger of the Verhovay and Rákóczi, which formed WPA. At that time, WPA members were mostly Hungarians. We had a wonderful group of people in our branch. We were like family, and continue to be so. We had dinner-dances at different branches, and we had our Christmas party in a large hall. My husband would run around buying toys for the children. We had entertainment, food and drinks. WPA was part of our social life and family. The best part was being invited to the Carousel Ball sponsored by the American Hungarian Foundation in New Brunswick, N.J. To me, it was a dream being in a beautiful country club. The cocktail hour was the hour of all hours. I went to many more balls since, but that first one was the best. The dinner was very good, but the dessert took the cake. Why was it all so good? The chef was Hungarian! We still have the ball; still see our old friends, thanks to the generosity of WPA. Then, there were the WPA conventions. My father and husband used to attend a long time before I did. My baby sitting job kept me at home. But, eventually I would attend and have many, many nice memories of all the people we met. Those were great times. The WPA Picnic is just as fantastic. I have to name one name because, of all the men and women who work so hard to make it a success, Endre Csornán stands at the heart of it all. Endre, God bless you forever. Branch 59 Windber, PA by Shirley A. Rakoczy Przywara WOW! What can I say~the WPA Picnic-A Great Fraternal-Fest is history, and what a great time was had by all who attended. Endre Csornán and everyone who played a part (some of whom contributed their time and effort all week prior to Sept. 11) are to be commended for making the whole affair nothing short of outstanding. I felt so proud and privileged to be a part of all of it. The food and pastries were superb, and if you walked away hungry, I am indeed sorry. Everything was first class. The Chinese auction was a huge success, as it usually is, thanks to the planning and follow through of Barbara House and her team of experts. Unfortunately, I did not win anything, but there's always next year. Since moving to Windber in 2009, I had not seen many of the Michiganders until this festival, and I was especially pleased at the reception I was given by many of them upon their arrival on Friday evening. The entire bus group and those of us at Scenic View enjoyed an outstanding dinner catered by the Oakhurst Tea Room in the Lakeside Lodge. Additionally, there were Rakoczy relatives and many friends who arrived Saturday on the Cleveland bus, so I had an opportunity to spend quality time with them as well as with others from Pennsylvania. The orchestra provided wonderful music all day, and I managed to get in a csárdás or two. I sincerely hope that everyone who attended felt the whole Hungarian experience of the entire day as heart-warming as I did. I am so proud to be Hungarian. Looking forward to 2011 and another Great Fraternal-Fest. Köszönöm!!! Next Deadline for submissions October 20, 2010 24 0 October 2010 0 William Penn Life
