Branch News Volunteers from Branch 705 participate in a Join Hands Day project, helping to construct a restroom facility at St. Hubert's Catholic Church in Newald, Wise. Branch 296 Springdale, PA by Patty Balia Branch 296 members thank you for attending and supporting the WPA Picnic at Scenic View. It was a great day, and a lot of family members are starting to use this event as their family reunion—how nice is that? One of our branch members, Irene Charles, had relatives come from Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia, just to name a few states from which picnic guests traveled. They all agreed there's no better place than Scenic View, with the music, food and pastries. They all are planning to attend next year, God permitting. I would like to personally thank all who bought WPA cookbooks, aprons and raffle tickets for the Autumn Greetings Basket. It was a delight to meet you. Thank you for supporting the WPA's Scholarship Foundation. Enjoy the beautiful fall weather. Take time to enjoy the beauty that is around you. Just look at what the Lord gives to us each fall. Enjoy. Our next branch meeting will be held Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at King's Family Restaurant in New Kensington, Pa. Happy birthday to Ron Balia, Matthew Charles, Dorothy Dinzeo, Boris Gosciejew and John E. Lovász. Happy 40th anniversary to Ron and Patty Balia, and happy anniversary to John and Gertie Simon. For your life insurance and annuity needs, please call Noreen Fritz, FIC, LUTCF, at 412-821-1837. A reminder: please donate knitting materials to Helen Gosciejew, so she can continue to knit slippers and lap blankets for the patients at our local veterans hospital. You can call Helen at 724-335-4788. If you have news to share, please call me at 724-339-4238. Branch 705 Mayville, WI by Timothy J. Lippert WPA Branch 705 is very proud to share with you news of our 2010 "Join Hands Day" project. St. Hubert's Catholic Church is located in the very northeast corner of Wisconsin in the city of Newald. The parish is quite old and is small by big city standards. It has only a few dozen parishioners, and with no running water, the parish had no indoor rest room facility either. Parishioners were forced to use an old outhouse. My wife and I were stunned to hear that, and when we heard of their plan to build a new bathroom, we spoke to their pastor, the Rev. John Cerkas, and offered help from WPA. It seems that earlier this year, the county inspectors had told St. Hubert's that their rest room facilities no longer met current codes and needed to be renovated. The church did not have the necessary funds to dredge out the septic or buy the lumber, this being a very impoverished area of the state. Their greatest asset was energetic school kids and a few dedicated parents. With funds from the Join Hands Day program, St. Hubert's was able to negotiate the materials necessary to construct an entirely new facility. The WPA's benevolence spurred other volunteers to step up and donate the needed time and machinery to get the job done. I'm proud to say that albeit still an outdoor bathroom, there is now a group of grateful Catholics who are very thankful to WPA's fraternal way of life. Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Vincent Frank What a beautiful time of year to be living within the mountains of Pennsylvania. The air is crisp, the leaves are turning all different colors, football is in full swing and it's time to clean up and prepare our gardens for next year. Enjoy the remainder of the autumn season. Good and happy times took place at the branch's annual summer picnic at Highland Park, located on a mountain in Altoona. We were treated with new member Bob Lasher from Nanty-Glo, Pa., who provided us with all types of polka music. We hope you can return next year, Bob. The weather, food and gifts for all provided a good time for the 70 people who attended. Many thanks to all those who helped make it a success. God willing, we will see you next year. Are you ready for Halloween on Oct. 31? The children—and even some adults-enjoy dressing up for the night and want to see if we can guess who's behind those masks. But, remember, they are looking for some sort of treat which many stores William Penn Life 0 October 2010 0 25
