2007 SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY AWARDS What WPA Means to Me STUDENTS APPLYING FOR GRANTS through the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation were asked to submit, among their application materials, an essay discussing the topic: “What William Penn Association Means to Me.” All essays were read and judged by members of the Foundation’s Executive Committee, and the best essays were selected for special recognition. Many fine essays were submitted, reflecting the outstanding fraternal spirit of our young member-scholars. Prizes in the form of additional cash grants were awarded to the top three essays among both new and renewal applicants. We proudly publish those six winning essays here. FIRST PRIZE - New Students - $500 Katherine M. Swartele Branch 89 Homestead, PA The William Penn Association is a non-profit fraternal organization, which provides benefits to its constituent members and the greater community. Its primary mission is to offer high-quality, low-cost life insurance and annuities; however, it also engages in valuable charity work for both its own membership and beyond. Although its products are outstanding, I feel the significant value of the William Penn Association is seen in its fraternal structure. This fraternity enables its members to share in the benefits beyond that which each individual could achieve. The synergy that is achieved from such a combination of support and community involvement truly elevates the organization above a simple commercial organization. I am asking to share in these benefits through the award of a scholarship grant. A scholarship will assist me in pursuing an education in the pharmacy program at Duquesne University. A career in pharmacy will allow me to contribute to the medical well-being of the community, while providing an exciting, professional environment. By sharing in the assistance provided by the William Penn Association, I know that I have an obligation to support the organization's mission to the best of my ability in the future, thus completing the circle of fraternity. Thank you for your consideration. |wpl| FIRST PRIZE - Renewal Students - $500 Richard J. Toth, Branch 89 Homestead, PA My representation of the William Penn Association is based upon its view of fraternalism, which I believe makes this organization very successful. However, fraternal ideals mean more than just running a business. By upholding the principle of fraternalism, the William Penn Association receives continued support and approval from its vast amount of members, enhancing the relationship between company and client. I feel that especially in today's world very little emphasis is placed on achieving a family-type environment in which both business and customer can thrive. The William Penn Association is one of the elite societies in my perspective because it can accomplish this daunting task without succumbing to financial burdens such as bankruptcy and severe debt. Most of my acclaim of the William Penn Association comes from the numerous benefits that society members can obtain. Specifically, organized events, such as the annual golf tournament, bowling tournament, and Christmas party, promote cheer and enjoyment for all ages, allowing lasting experiences and bonding relationships of people who otherwise might have never met one another. Utilizing Penn Scenic View by other events, such as the Hungarian Language Camp (importantly observing and preserving the organization's founding heritage) and the WPA Fraternal Fest gives back to members of its society in delightful times alone. These types of fraternal activities prove to me that the William Penn Association understands the extra intangibles of a flourishing business while truly caring for the benefit of its members. |wpl| 10 William Penn Life, November 2007
