MIDWAY, PA — If the success of any event can be judged by the number of people who leave it smiling, then the WPA's 24th Annual Golf Tournament and Scholarship Days was very successful. Nearly perfect summer weather, an outstanding golf course and generous amounts of fraternal spirit combined to make for a memorable and enjoyable day. The course at the Quicksilver Golf Club tested the skills of our golfers, and many were happy that the tournament was being played in a scramble format, thus giving them a better chance to earn some prize money. When all was said and done, first prize was awarded to the team of Steve Meyers, John Toth and "Terrible" Tom Kalupanov. The group's round of 14-under Marguerite McNelis of Branch 34 Pittsburgh (left) and Sandra Ardale of Branch 89 Homestead, Pa., each won a $2,000 life insurance policy in the Fraternal Prize drawing. par was five strokes better than any other team, and good enough to win them $400. Two teams tied for second place at 9-under par. One team included John Horvath Sr., John Horvath Jr., John Wetzels and Bill Wood. They tied with the team of Dan Deabner, Ron Blatt, Tony Kaminski and Kevin Duris. (For a complete list of tournament winners, see the Leader Board on Page 8.) The three were among 108 golfers who participated in this year's tournament. The weekend's biggest prize, however, was awarded Friday evening during the annual golfers reception held at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott. For only the second time in the tournament's history, one lucky member won $1,000 in the annual Putting Contest. David Post of Branch 336 Harrisburg was the only one of 10 participants randomly drawn who sank the required 30-foot putt. Upon making the putt, he thrust his arms in the air as the other guests cheered in excitement. He wasn't the only winner that night, as 46 prize baskets were awarded during the evening's Chinese auction, conducted for the benefit of the WPFA Scholarship Foundation The fun and fraternalism continued the next day at the golf course and well into Saturday afternoon when the annual golf awards barbeque was held. For the first time, the barbeque was held at the golf course's club house immediately following the conclusion of the tournament. The weekend's activities allowed both golfers and nongolfers alike to take home some valuable prizes. Among the activities held during the barbeque was the "Fraternal Prize Drawing" during which two members in attendance were each awarded a $2,000 paid-up WPA life insurance certificate. The lucky prize winners were Sandra Ardale of Branch 89 Homestead, Pa. and 6 William Penn Life, August 2007
