Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL by Joan Mauerman The WPA won second place for our display at the 79th annual convention of the Florida Fraternal Congress (FFC) and the 30th annual convention of the Florida Fraternal Insurance Counsellors (FFIC), held May 14 to 16 at the Ramada Plaza in Kissimmee, Fla. Good job. Mike Tomcsak was presented with a plaque from the FFC and FFIC in recognition of his continuous support of and dedication to fraternalism. During the general session of the convention, Joan Thompson of Missing Children, Inc., asked Joan Mauerman to stand and be recognized for donating 150 handmade teddy bears to Missing Children, Inc., in the name of the WPA. Ms. Thompson said that two of the bears had been given to the mother and brother of a young girl who was missing. One day, months later, Thompson opened her door and found the two bears on her stoop. Attached was a note saying the girl had been returned unharmed, and that they thought the bears should be given to others as "good luck charms." The FFC awarded $500 scholarships to three young people: Hunter Davis, Toney Harris and Melissa Allen. It was a very nice convention, and I met a lot of wonderful people from Ohio, Wisconsin, Texas and Oklahoma. I was very tired as I was in charge of the hospitality room and Chinese auction, and helped put up the WPA display. As you probably guessed, the WPA is alive and kicking in Florida. The theme for the convention was a patriotic one. For the centerpiece in the hospitality room, I had a Beattie Bailey doll in uniform surrounded by flags and eagles. Ironically, veterans from World War II held their convention at the same time. I have never seen so many different colored uniforms. Birthday greetings to Reni Ganti, Lizzie Wright, Jeff Damon, Kevin Meehan, Helen Rosner, Bob Russell, Eleanor Di Guilio, Jamie Mauerman and Olga Wansa. Get well wishes to Steve Novak, Lou Molnár, Arlene Csornán and Marie Naples. Our condolences to the Mayor family. I will always remember Caroline Mayor and her beautiful smile. She was always so friendly and happy. May she rest in peace. Happy wedding anniversary to Lizzie and Steve Wright, Kim and Colin Hughes, Pat and Emily Damon and Olga and A1 Wansa. On May 29,1 attended the wedding of my granddaughter Michelle Meehan to Dominic (Sonny) Boano. The wedding was held in Boardman, Ohio. There were 400 people at the reception held at the Embassy room. I had a great visit with my children, National Director Michael F. The presentation was made in May during the annual meeting of the FFC. William Pena life, July 2004 23
