Branch News recently celebrated its 40th year at its present site on Southampton Road in northeast Philadelphia. Richard Gyuraki, whose family are longtime members, was the featured speaker. We want to thank all those who helped coordinate our Delegate District election meeting held in May. Special thanks to Aranka Mezei for helping with the refreshments. We are always grateful for the loyal participation of Stephen and James Pokorny. The results of the election will appear in next month's William Penn Life. Many thanks to our new member, Shirley DeMaria, for purchasing a WPA annuity. A special hello to the Harta family and the many members of the Mezei family. We also wish Helen Vida a speedy recovery from her recent illness. We send special greetings to the many members of the former Catholic Knights of St. George whose juvenile policies have now matured. We look forward to many more years of good relations between you and the WPA. For your life insurance or annuity needs, please call Jack Tokár at 215- 357-4516. Have a good summer! Branch 189 Alliance. OH Something new and exciting has come to Branch 189 Alliance-a Ladies Auxiliary. Although it's something new to us all, we're underway with new officers: Gracie Cobbs, president; Rhonda Roudabush, vice president; Lori Furry, treasurer; and Sherry Moore, secretary. After sponsoring its first events, a fish fry and a rummage sale, the ladies are helping to renovate and improve our home. We hope to have more details on upcoming events in the near future. Stay tuned. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Goldie J. Szarka Kellemes nyári napokat kívánunk. Wishing all of you pleasant summer days. Have a great and safe Fourth of July. I'm sure everyone is enjoying all those good summer picnics and bbq's. I just can't believe we're half way through 2003. No wonder they call these days the lazy, hazy days of summer~I've been a little lazy myself in gathering news for our branch. However, I do know that the City of McKeesport will be observing the 44th annual mid-summer tradition of the International Village. It's a wonderful time of the year when all nationalities come together to celebrate their heritage. This year it will be held Aug. 12 to 15 at Renziehausen Park. Try to come down. You'll enjoy yourself. The Hungarians will participate in the program and run a food booth. Last year, this event drew close to 50,000 people. My husband, Joe, left for Hungary in the middle of June and will be back at the end of July. He has two sisters and many relatives in Bicske. For various reasons, I couldn't go with him this year, but, God willing, next year looks good. For your insurance needs, please call Alex Goydan at 412-751-8259. A legjobbakat kívánunk az életben mindenkinek. Wishing you all the best that life can bring. Branch 349 Weirton, WV Congratulations to Branch 349 member Emily Nicholson (pictured left), who is in the 8th grade at Harding Middle School in Steubenville, Ohio. Emily and five other students placed first in the regional and state competitions of the D/I Destination Imagination Tournament. They earned a spot in the global competition that was held May 21 to 24 at the University of Tennessee in Nashville. They competed against other teams from around the U.S. and more than 20 countries. Much to their delight, they came in first place winning a huge trophy and gold medals. Their team also won the Da Vinci Award, the highest award for creativity. We congratulate Emily also for being inducted into the 2002/2003 National Honor Roll of Middle School Students for outstanding academic achievement. Her picture and biography and a list of her accomplishments both in school and in her community will be published in a special commemorative edition of the honor roll. Emily is the granddaughter of Nick and Teresa Toth. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL by Joan Mauerman Congratulations to all the winners at the bowling tournament. The food was really good and the Chinese Auction was a huge success. Frank Wukovits Jr. did a fabulous job as the emcee of the Surprise Auction. It was great to see Kathy Novak and her dad, Steve, at the banquet. Congratulations to Lori and Alan Szabó on their little girl, Bridget. Proud pops showed me a picture, and she's a little doll. Get well wishes to Ernie Mozer who is recuperating after surgery. Ernie and his wife Mary are two of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. I'm proud to be their friend. Happy birthday to Kalman Nagy, Rene Gantt, Jeff Damon, Lizzie Damon and Kevin Meehan. Happy wedding anniversary to Colin and Kim Hughes. I attended the 28th Annual Hungarian Festival in New Brunswick, N.J., on June 7. Even the rain did not dampen the festivities and fratemalism. A lot of events moved indoors. We had dinner at the Boy Scout Building with Donna and Steve Varga and Bill Vasvary. The food there is among the best. Ruth Vasvary was at the reception desk at the museum. She looked great. It was nice to see Jack Tokár. He wore a red jacket that everyone wanted to buy from him. I love to hear his stories about the old country. There were a lot of people who put in long hours of work for the festival, 18 ffilliu Penn Life, July 2003
