Branch News but Kati Homovics stood out from the group. She made me tired just watching her work. She was everywhere. It was a pleasure to meet her. The photo exhibit of Budapest and Transylvania by Steven Spinder was wonderful. My favorite photo was a panoramic view of Budapest at night with a full moon. Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Vincent Frank Congratulations to Christopher Albert Johns, this year's recipient of the annual Branch 800 bond award. This award is given to the graduating male senior who earns the highest grades in religion class at Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona. He is the son of Albert and Paulette Johns of Altoona. Along with our branch award, Christopher (pictured right) received a scholarship grant from the Blair Rotary and is a member of the National Honor Roll, Who's Who Among America's High School Students and the National Science Achievement Academy. The Rev. Lee A. Lynch, principal of the high school, forwarded Christopher's name to our branch secretary in a letter announcing the selection of the winner. Father Lynch thanks Branch 800 for sponsoring this award each year. Christopher is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Altoona where he serves as a eucharistic minister. He completed his elementary education at Altoona Central Catholic Middle School. While attending Bishop Guilfoyle, he enjoyed track, cross country and fencing and presented the latest news to students on closed-circuit TV in the classrooms. He also performed 25 hours of community service each year at the Sacred Heart bible camp. Graduation ceremonies were held May 27 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona, with the Most Rev. Joseph V. Adamec, bishop of the Altoona/Johnstown Diocese, as celebrant. Outside of school, Christopher enjoys lifting weights, running, baseball, hiking, coin collecting and attending Altoona Curve baseball games. At present, he is employed as a supervisor at Dairy Queen. He will begin classes this fall at St. Francis University in Loretto, Pa., where he will be majoring in health science and occupational therapy. He plans to be an occupational therapist. The branch officers congratulate all graduating students. Christopher and all graduates have our best wishes and will be in our prayers. Now, to all members of Branch 800: Our summer picnic will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 6:00 p.m. at Highland Park in Altoona, rain or shine. Call me at 814-695-0213 for your reservations. Deadline for reservations is July 27. Branch 8114 Clarion, PA by Noreen Fritz Hello to everyone! Well, summer finally seems to be here with the warmer weather upon us, but it was tricky for a while. I was starting to wonder if we were going to skip right into fall with those chilly temperatures. The warmer weather has arrived just in time for all the Fourth of July celebrations. My wishes for a funfilled Fourth of July to all members. What a great time to show your patriotism and be thankful for your independence! July brings not only the birthday of the good old USA, but also the birthdays of the following branch members: Diana Reinsel, Roger Steiner, Donald Zacheri, Anthony Bagileo, Robert Leonard, Ashley Aaron, Keyne Rice, Margaret Rice, Justine Black, Dana Ochs, Robert Schwabenbauer, Gerald Gatesman, James Amato and Margaret Gatesman. I hope all of you have a wonderful day. Longtime member Doris Cherico suffered a heart attack recently. I am happy to say she is going to be just fine and is recovering at home. I am sure you all will join me in wishing her the speediest of recoveries. We hope Doris will feel well enough to join us for some fun in August at the annual branch steak fry. We do not have a firm date yet, but it will be sometime in the month of August. More to come.
