Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 248 Monaville, WV Branch 349 Weirton, WV Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH Branch 8285 Mingo Junction, OH by Louis A. Fodor December 11 turned out to be a wonderful day in the Ohio Valley, especially in Martins Ferry, Ohio, where a Christmas party was held for the members of the branches listed above. For a while, it seemed a disaster awaited us instead. The party was originally set for Dec. 12 at the American Legion hall. But, just days before the party, we learned a mistake was made and we lost our reservation. The Legion said they could give us the hall on Dec. 11, but we had to start our party an hour later than originally scheduled. Right away we mailed notices with the new date and time. People manned the phones to notify as many members as possible. Santa Claus was notified, as was the band hired for the dance to be held after the children's party. Everything turned out just fine. The children enjoyed themselves and got to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus (Gabe and Irene Rozsa). All the children received a gift and a personalized letter from Santa, as well as a money holder and five dollars. Our thanks to Patty Bennett who helped Santa with the personalized letters. Joe Jeromos and his Tokay Orchestra played for the crowd while we all enjoyed a buffet prepared by the ladies of the Legion. After dinner, the band played the csárdás. Danny Laslo and I sat in with our violins. Andy Suták, president of the Ohio Valley Hungarian American Cultural Society, announced the society's tentative schedule of events for the new year: the Spring Banquet on April 8; the annual picnic and bacon roast on Aug. 20; the Harvest Dance on Oct. 21; and the Christmas party on Dec. 9. Our thanks to my wife Ethel, Andy and Susann Suták, Teresa Toth and Mickey, Patty Bennett and Chuck, Gilbert and Mary Russ and countless others who helped to make this party a wonderful experience for the 100 guests who attended. Instead of a disaster, we had a very good time. Our thanks also go to those wonderful volunteers who prepared and served our annual meal for the elderly residents of Hartman Manor during the holiday season. We fed 38 people, including three who could not leave their rooms. Branch 13 Trenton, IMJ Branch 13 officers (l-r, seated): Elsie H.
