So, prepare yourself for another summer of fraternal activities. I know that I speak for all the Pittsburgh area branches when I say we are looking forward to hosting this year's bowling tournament. Branch members celebrating a birthday during the month of March are Gary Patrick Vámos, Maria Sagi, Marge Bugielski, Sally Herrera and John Nagy. We hope 1999 will be a happy and healthy year. We also would like to extend happy anniversary wishes to a special couple, Mike and Zita Kara. Last, but not least, our branch would like to extend blessed Easter greetings to all. If you have any news you would like to share, please contact Andy McNelis at (412) 421-6031. For information about WPA life insurance and annuity policies, please contact Branch Coordinator Maria Bistey at (412) 431-6035. (EDITOR'S NOTE: the members of Branch 34 extend special wishes for a happy birthday to Andy McNelis, national director and Branch 34 reporter, who celebrates his day March 5.) Branch 226 shines the fraternal spotlight on one of our young members, Stephen J. Stipkovits, a high school junior and Eagle Scout. Stephen joined the scouting program in 1986 at the age of 6. Since then he has earned the Arrow of Light and held the positions of librarian, patrol leader, senior patrol leader and junior assistant scoutmaster. He attended the 1993 National Scout Jamboree. Stephen has also earned 31 merit badges, including one for archeology, making him the first scout in the Greater Pittsburgh Council to earn that merit badge. His Eagle Scout project was a new citizen science project sponsored by the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology. His project consisted of building and placing 28 bluebird nest boxes, then collecting data from the boxes. The data was sent to Cornell for study. Stephen's project is now his troop's on-going wildlife project. Stephen's school activities include playing the baritone horn for the marching band, concert band and pep band. He also participates in the newspaper, environmental club, PEPP academy and junior varsity baseball. He is a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in McKeesport and has served as an altar boy since 1988. After graduating next year, he plans to study archeology at Penn State University. f Branch v Payton, OH J by Anne Schmidt & Michele Daley-LaFlame Congratulations to Michael Mayerchak who recently retired as branch vice president. Mike was honored at our Christmas party in December. In attendance were his wife Betty, his daughter Jeannie, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We commend him for his many years of service to our fraternal society. We will surely miss his involvement. We wish he and his wife the very best of health for the coming year. Congratulations also to our branch officers for 1999: Anne Kertesz, president; Steven LaFlame, vice president; Anne Schmidt, secretarytreasurer; and John Horvath and Mark Schmidt, auditors. Our bowling league continues in spite of inclement weather. We're anticipating a good turnout for the tournament in Pittsburgh. We will once again be renting a bus. If you are interested, call Michele LaFlame at 278-5970. The best time to sign up for the bus trip is at our bowling banquet which will be held Sunday, April 18, at 3:00 p.m. at Capri Lanes. The cost of the dinner is $6.50 per person. Call Michele LaFlame with your banquet reservations by April 11. We will also be choosing teams for the WPA tournament during the banquet. Be there to get on your selected team. Our next cabbage roll sale will be on March 25. Pick-up time will be from noon to 6:00 p.m. Rolls are $1 each. The last day to order is March 21. To order call Anna Kertesz at 275- 6654 or Michele LaFlame at 278-5970. Steve and Michele, your agents for Branch 249, will have a special challenge for our members for the month of April. Our local Hungarian program on WQRP-89.5 FM will be conducting its annual spring fundraiser on Sunday, April 18. The challenge: for every policy we sell, we will donate to the Hungarian program $10 or more, depending on the amount of the policy. Call now to schedule your April appointment, 278-5970. Now is the time to think about getting policies for your grandchildren. Maybe you have newlyweds in the family who need insurance. Or, maybe you may need to increase your own coverage. Buying insurance in April will help support our local Hungarian radio program. It will also strengthen our WPA fraternal family and give your own family greater peace of mind.
