All articles and photographs for the September issue of the William Penn Life are due in our office bv August 20.1999. good time. The Friday night hospitality and the Saturday night banquet were both well attended and greatly successful. A good time was had at the putting and pitching contests. The winner of the first prize in the raffle was our member John Wetzel. He and his friend will enjoy a golf getaway weekend. Thanks to the staff at the Home Office for all their hard work which made the tournament a great success. On Sunday, Aug, 1, Branch 129 will hold its annual family picnic at the Swan Club. A full report on the picnic will appear in our next branch report. The Rev. István Nyeste is out of the hospital and is now in a rest home. We hope he will regain the strength he needs to undergo more surgery later. Mark your calendar for our Aug. 11 branch meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW Post, 1591 Lockbourne Ave., Columbus. For your life insurance or annuity needs, please call Árpád Sibrik, branch coordinator, at (614) 231-8024, or write to him at 645 S. Kellner Road, Columbus, OH 43209. Branch 226 A McKeesport, PA by Alexander J. Goydan Once again Branch 226's teams—five men's teams and four women's teams—excelled at the 56th Annual WPA Bowling Tournament. Our bowlers claimed prize money in most categories. We are proud of their accomplishments. Locally, the regular bowling season will be starting the last week of August. Some 50 bowlers are signed up with a waiting list being maintained. While the WPA marks its 113th year of existence, we should also remember that July 13 marked the 60th anniversary of the second membership trip contest of the old Verhovay. In 1939 about 25 contestants of the Verhovay were awarded a trip to Hungary for getting new members during a nationwide contest. I was one of the fortunate ones to receive this award. We left New York on July 13 aboard the Polish ship MS Pilsudski. After eight days at sea we stopped at Copenhagen, Denmark, to discharge some passengers. On the ninth day we arrived in port and travelled by rail across Poland to the Hungarian border crossing. In Voloc we were met by relatives and officials from the town. We travelled through Munkács, Csap and Miskolcs before finally arriving in Budapest. From July 23 to Aug. 3 we enjoyed many sightseeing tours. On Aug. 5 a group of us went to Debrecen University where we joined other European students in studying the language and history of Hungary. Our studies were interrupted by the war in Europe and we were advised by the U.S. embassy to return to the U.S. as soon as possible. Needless to say problems arose as very few ships were available. The Polish shipping lines were already involved in the war. Finally, the Italian ship MS Saturina was available, and we left from Italy on Sept. 20. We stopped in Patras, Greece, and Genoa, Italy, before heading through the Straits of Gibraltar where the English stopped our ship. We finally arrived in New York on the morning of Oct. 10. The feelings we had on seeing the Statue of Liberty surely echoed those of our forefathers when they first emigrated to this country, welcomed by freedom and safety. f Branch 590 'Y Cape Coral, FL J by Joan Mauerman Many of our branch members are up north or in Europe on vacation.
