Home Office staff bids fond farewell to Maria Bistey PITTSBURGH - The Home Office bid a fond farewell May 29 to employee Maria Bistey who retired that day after more than 11 years of service to the WPA. Maria worked in membership services and served as a receptionist and as the Home Office’s Hungarian secretary. She was the guest of honor at a luncheon held May 27 at the Allegheny Club, located in Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium. On her final day at the office, she was treated to an ice cream cake and gifts from the WPA and several of her fellow employees. Maria wanted to say a few words to her fellow employees, but fearing her emotions would get the best of her, she wrote down what she wanted to say and asked co-workers to read it. She suggested the staff should gather for lunch one year from now. “Then I might be able to tell you what retirement means to me and if you should be envious of me,” she wrote. She also recalled emigrating to On May 29, it was “last call”for WPA employee Maria Bistey. America at age 17. “[I] came alone, speaking limited English. Even that was British, not Pennsylvanian dialect.” “To make a long story short, don’t let the spirit of American slip away or let the flame die and fratemalism fade,” she wrote. “I am proud to be in the William Penn family.” Istenhozzád, Mária.
