Volume 33, Number 6 Address Correction Requested June 1998 Heads Up, Harrisburg! The WPA 15th Annual Golf Tournament is coming to town! In just about a month, members and friends of the WPA will be heading to Pennsylvania’s capital city for one of the Association’s biggest and most enjoyable fraternal events of the year: the Annual Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament could be one of our best fraternal events ever, not just because of all the fun and exciting plans we’ve made for our golfers, but also because of all the wonderful attractions the Harrisburg/Hershey area offers to families looking for a good time. The Home Office is still accepting entries for the golf tournament, which will be played Saturday, July 18, at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course in Harrisburg, Pa. The official tournament entry/dinner reservation form appears on Page 12 of this issue. All golfing entries and dinner reservations are due at the Home Office by June 30. Hotel accommodations will be at the Harrisburg East Holiday Inn, located only one-and-a-half miles from the golf course. Room rates will be $69 (plus tax) per night, double or king. All golfers and guests must make their own room reservations directly with the hotel. To do so, call the Holiday Inn at (717) 939-7841. You may want to make those reservations as soon as possible because, even though the WPA has reserved a large block of rooms, those rooms could be booked quickly. As we’ve said, this year’s golf tournament promises to attract not only many golfers, but also their families. Yes, this year’s tournament could be a great family getaway. In addition to being close to the golf course, the Holiday Inn is also only 10 miles from HersheyPark amusement park and the world-famous Hershey’s chocolate factory. Children (and many adults, no doubt) love taking the guided tour of the place where their favorite candies are made, then spending the rest of the day at one of the region’s best theme parks. Children might also enjoy playing on the five-hole pitch-andputt course located on the grounds of the Holiday Inn. Adults will love the big cash prizes they could win during our 18-hole tournament. A special $15,000 prize will go to any eligible WPA member who scores a hole-in-one on the specially designated Par 3 hole during tournament play. If no one scores an ace on that hole, then the eligible member who gets closest to the pin on that hole will win $500. Plus, eligible members can win $5,000 for scoring a hole-in-one on any of the course’s other par 3 holes during tournament play. To be eligible for these hole-in-one prizes, a golfer must be at least 18 years of age and a life-benefit member of the William Penn Association as of July 1, 1998, with at least one year’s premium paid. All golfers can win special prizes to be awarded to the winners of various skill shot contests which will be held at holes along the course. This year’s longest drive contest will award prizes to both men and women in two age brackets: (1) golfers ages 18 to 59; and (2) golfers age 60 and older. Plus, prizes will be awarded to the men’s and women’s low gross and low net champions. The tournament weekend will officially begin on Friday, July 17, with the annual golfers reception at the Holiday Inn. During the reception we will again hold the putting contest for the benefit of the William Penn Fraternal Asscociation Scholarship Foundation. Any contestant who sinks three putts in one turn will win $50. Other prizes will be awarded to those sinking one or two putts. The weekend’s official activities will conclude the next evening with the annual golf awards dinner, also at the Holiday Inn. The awards dinner will include a door prize giveaway and the exciting auction raffle for a new set of golf clubs and bag. For those golfers who wish to get in a practice round, the WPA has booked tee times at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course on Friday, July 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.Please note the course requires all golfers to wear soft spikes. To schedule a tee time for Friday, call the golf course at (717) 986-1984. Entry fees for Saturday’s tournament are $38 for WPA members and $46 for nonmembers. The fee includes greens fee, cart, a golf glove, a sleeve of balls and refreshments at the turn. The entry fee does not include the cost of the Saturday’s golf awards dinner. Dinner tickets are $21 for adults age 16 and older, $14 for teens ages 13 to 15, and $3 for children ages 3 to 12. Individuals, branches, businesses and groups may sign on as hole sponsors for the tournament for a $100 donation to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. To be a hole sponsor, contact George S. Charles Jr., national president. Remember: get your hotel reservations in as soon as possible, and plan on you and your family having a fun-filled weekend this July. Reservations for language camp due July 1 PITTSBURGH - Of the European languages, Hungarian is among the most difficult to master. Those who do leam it as a second language can take great pride in their accomplishment. To get you started on your road toward mastering this complex but beautiful tongue, the WPA invites you to attend its 9th Annual Hungarian Language Camp, to be held Aug. 2 to 8 at Penn Scenic View, Rockwood, Pa. After completing our one-week camp, you may not be ready to take a job as a United Nations translator, but you will have a basic understanding of Hungarian grammar and syntax and a vocabulary large enough to carry on simple conversation. The camp is open to all WPA life-benefit members age 18 and older. Instruction will be geared to benefit those with no knowledge of Hungarian as well as those looking to brush up on their present skills. Students will receive 25 hours of instruction focusing on practical usage while learning about the history, culture and traditions of the Hungarian people. The camp will be limited to 25 students, allowing our experienced teachers to give each student sufficient individual attention. Classes will be held each morning and afternoon, Monday through Friday. After dinner, everyone will gather for social activities, allowing students to practice their new skills. The cost for the week is only $200 per person. The price includes lodging, three meals a day, instruction and materials. Clean linens and towels will be provided. A limited number of double rooms will be available. All other students will be housed in dormitory-style accommodations. To register for our Hungarian Language Camp, complete the form found in this issue and send it, along with your deposit of $50 per person, to the Home Office. Registration deadline is July 1. On that date, the balance of the $200 fee will also be due. For more information about the camp, please call the Home Office toll-free at 1-800-848-PENN (7366).
