House National Director Good luck to all of you who have signed up for the bowling tournament. I was tickled pink with the wonderful response. Looking forward to seeing all these wonderful familiar faces. Tom House was the guest of honor at a very special birthday party. No, I can’t say which one. Thank you to all who helped make this a special event. Rose Antal recently returned from Hungary. She had a marvelous time. She sure gave me the yen to go. Remember, WPA is sponsoring trips to Hungary this year. Call for information. Please remember in your prayers the families of Anna Bianchi, Ida Kanyo and Mary Kato. Ida Kanyo and Mary Kato were two very special women to me. I’ve known and loved them all my life. Rest in peace. You will be deeply missed. A special WPA welcome to new members Anthony Ladd, Rose, Zsuzann and Tibor Tuske. (A very special family) Welcome, also, to Jason Cassar, grandson of Rose Antal and Richard Miastkowski. Thank you for choosing WPA for your special needs. Continued get well wishes to Michael Oberg and Richard Miastkowski Jr. Hope you are well on the road to recovery. Special greetings to Steve and Margaret Danko. (Thank you) Happy May birthday to Rose Wicker. Happy anniversary greetings to National Director Lou Fodor and his super wife Ethel. May you have many more. Our next membership meeting will be held May 8. Please call me if you have any questions. Now you can start thinking golf! For all your life insurance needs, or if you have news to share, please call me anytime at (313) 383-4472. Branch 44 Akron, OH By Elizabeth K. Darago Branch 44 President The 1997 family holiday party was a merry success! Sixty-eight members attended and enjoyed the WPA fratemalism. Members as young as 6 months and as young-at-heart as 87 years laughed, ate, partied, met Santa and received gifts (junior members) or door prizes of poinsettias (adult members). The Home Office handouts were especially popular with all members. I believe I saw a low-flying wooden airplane on final approach to the members’ tables. Santa and Rose the Elf distributed junior photos with Santa from the 1996 holiday party, as well as the wonderful gifts to the junior members at this year’s party. Who was that bearded Santa who “hoho-ho’d” to the delight of the whole restaurant? Could it have been auditor Alex Darago? We’re not telling. Holiday baskets were distributed to three needy families and organizations. One senior citizen remains in the hospital/rehab center after a major heart attack in December. When she returns home, a basket will be waiting. One basket was delivered to a man who was paralyzed from the neck-down in a drive-by shooting in 1995. He was an innocent victim in the wrong place at the wrong time. A third, extremely large basket was taken to the Battered Women’s Shelter, a non-profit agency providing temporary shelter to abused women and their children. Thanks to all members and the Home Office who made these gifts of the “food of life” available to the food basket recipients. In 1997, Branch 44 also participated in the “Adopt-a-Nun” project through which retired nuns at a mother house filled out a five-item request sheet. These “handmaidens of the Lord” were so excited that someone thought of them at holiday time. Their lists were so poignant: tissues, face cream, cookies, greeting cards, toothpaste, colored pens, a bow for the door of a nun in the nursing wing. Branch 44 adopted five nuns. The nuns that were able to wrote thank you notes. Our members are on the prayer lists of these nuns. This year has been mild so far. El Nino has not adversely affected Ohio. We’ve had really warm temperatures. The spring flowers have begun to bloom and the birds are twittering their romantic chirps. Here’s our 1998 calendar of events. All activities will be held at 1643 - 13th St. SW, Akron (Phone 753-5270) unless otherwise noted. directions or jv$t want to chat.
