Brooch News September 1992, William Penn Life, Page 3 National Director Michael F. Tomcsak (left) presents a 50-year member pin to Alex Sabo of Branch 590 Cape Coral, Fla. The presentation took, place at the Magyar Freedom Club in Plant City, Fla. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 President As autumn approaches, we look forward to gorgeous foliage in northern Ohio, and we reflect on summer’s carefree sunny days. Branch 14 members enjoyed some of those warm summer days at the outings we held at Sea World June 28 and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Aug. 16. Many Branch 14 members also attended the annual national golf tournament. Congratulations to tournament low gross winners Dick and Heather Preston. Dick led the men with a gross score of 77, and Heather, 19, shot a women’s low round of 79. Heather is a student at Penn State and member of its women’s golf team. She is also a William Penn scholarship recipient. This is the first year a father and daughter have won the tournament, and we are very proud of them. Congratulations to Zoltán Szabó and Goldie (Simon) Szabó who were married May 17. Goldie and Zoli went to their senior prom together in 1938 at John Hay High School in Cleveland. In 1941 Goldie married Ernie Simon, and, that same year, Zoli married Margaret Horvath. Zoli and Ernie were also boyhood friends. In 1958 Ernie Simon passed away. And in 1989 Margaret Szabó passed away. Fate brought Zoli and Goldie back together after more than a half century when they met at a mutual friend’s funeral. We wish Goldie and Zoli many years of happiness together. Our branch meetings resume Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 4116 Rockside Road, Independence. Please plan to attend. For all your insurance needs, please contact the local office at (216)838-1200. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Eva Laczina Branch 15 Secretary Branch 15 wishes to congratulate Anton and Irene Kovács who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 24. In honor of the Kovács’ anniversary, Father Eordogh spoke beautifully on their behalf during a Mass at St. Stephan King of Hungary Church. Mr. and Mrs. Kovács have been faithful members of the church for more than 50 years. Mr. Kovács has also been a loyal member of the William Penn Association for more than 50 years, while his wife has been a dedicated member of our Association for precisely 50 years. Both were originally members of the former Verhovay Aid Association. So, both the Kovács’ and our society have come a long way. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Kovács heartfelt and deep congratulations for what we feel is a truly commendable accomplishment. May they both enjoy many more happy and healthy anniversaries. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy E. Novak Branch 28 Reporter Congratulations to all golf tournament winners! The Home Office arranged a most successful and enjoyable time for all in attendance. It was so nice to see friends from out of town again. Branch 28 members attending the golf banquet were quite lucky, as Irene Nemeth won the big door prize, a golf weekend for two at the Ramada Inn. Other branch winners included Joe Maty, Margaret Maty, Balint Getz, Steve Novak, Alan Szabó and Kathy Novak. Due to inclement weather our branch picnic had to be cancelled, leaving many members disappointed. We welcome Lauren Vos, Landon Vos and Jody McGraw as new members of our branch. We extend congratulations to all those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. We also wish speedy recoveries to all those under the weather. Our sincere sympathy goes to those who have lost loved ones recently. May they rest in peace. As summer comes to a close, we remind our members that our monthly meetings will resume in September. We hope the summer provided safe travels and many happy memories for all. For any insurance needs, please contact Gabe Nameth at (216) 792-8145 or Alan Szabó at (216) 792-7851. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator Summer is almost gone, but it did not leave without first giving Columbus its wettest July in 100 years. Our ladies team had a good time at the national bowling tournament in Dayton. Several non-bowling members also went to the bowling banquet, and all enjoyed themselves. The food and celebration were excellent. The golfers had just as good a time in West Middlesex, Pa. The hotel, food and golf course were A-l. Too bad we had such a rainy week before. The food and putting contest at Friday’s reception were both very good, but nobody sank three putts to win the first prize. Saturday’s golf banquet was quite enjoyable, and the prime rib was perfect for our taste. Branch 129 will hold a family picnic in Jeffrey’s Park on Saturday, Sept. 19, from noon to 5:00 p.m. Notices will be sent out in early September. Our menu will include fried chicken, brats, hot dogs, coffee and iced tea. Members are asked to bring a covered dish or pastries and may bring their own beverages if they like. Paper plates, napkins and table service will be provided. Our branch will hold its next business meeting on Oct. 14 at Leonardo’s. For any insurance needs, please call Branch Coordinator Arpad Sibrik at (614) 231-8024, or write 645 S. Kellner Road, Columbus, OH 43209. I will be happy to help you. The officers and members of our branch wish to extend our condolences to the family of James Mozga. Mr. Mozga was a past treasurer of Branch 296 who served our branch for many years. He will be missed by all who knew him and will be remembered for his kindness and the pride he took in his Hungarian heritage. Our branch meetings will resume on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will feature a guest speaker. Bring a friend to our bacon roast—see you there! Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President Our branch meetings resumed on Tuesday, Sept. 1, after a threemonth vacation. Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the social hall of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. All members are invited to attend. The Rev. Msgr. Michael E. Servinsky, our branch’s spiritual director, has been transferred to St. Joseph’s Parish in Coupon. We now wait for a new pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish to be appointed by the bishop. We thank Msgr. Servinsky for everything he did for Branch 800. It is with much sadness that we report that William E. Frank Sr. died on Aug. 3, 1992, after an extended illness. He was 63. William was the former secretary of the former Branch 17 for many years. He was buried from St. Mary’s Church in Altoona. Our sympathy goes out to his family. He was also the brother of this reporter. May his soul rest in peace. We also report with much sadness that Robert J. Rentz, 72, died recently at his home following a long illness. He was a longtime member of our branch. Robert was buried from St. Mary’s Church in Hollidaysburg. We extend our sympathy to his family. May his soul rest in peace. Congratulations to Bill Drass on his retirement from Conrail after many, many years of service. Bill, we hope you enjoy every minute of your well-deserved retirement. He is a faithful reader of the William Penn Life. It sure was nice to see Cletus Mielnik from San Diego. Cletus was on vacation visiting friends in the Altoona-Hollidaysburg area. He has been a member for 46 years. He informed me that he reads each issue of the William Penn Life out there in California. It’s good to know that Branch 800 news is being read in different parts of the country by our members. Branch Trustee Edwin Smith and his wife, longtime residents of Tyrone, have moved to the Hillcrest Apartments in Hollidaysburg. A real warm welcome to both of you to this city. Branch 8121 St. Marys, PA By Margaret Marconi Branch 8121 Secretary The members of Branch 8121 gathered for a regular meeting on Aug. 2 at St. Marys Parochial Grade School. Following the meeting we enjoyed a wonderful picnic for children and adults. We had so much rain during the days prior to our picnic that we were very glad to be blessed with a beautiful, sunny day for our affair. Everyone who attended received a door prize. Articles and photographs for the October issue of the William Penn Life are due September 18,1992
