Continued from Page 4 Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Ron Balia Branch 296 President Branch 296 members are thinking spring! We are planning an Easter egg hunt for the children. To make it successful we are asking our members to attend the March 18 branch meeting at 7:30 p.m. to help us plan it. At this meeting we will also enjoy looking at old photos of Branch 296 affairs, including past bowling tournaments and outings. Please come and enjoy the fraternal fellowship on March 18 at the United Church of Christ meeting room on Walters Lane in Springdale. We need you and your input to make our activities successful. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Reporter Branch 590 held its meeting Feb. 9 at Egret Hall in Cape Coral. Members discussed plans for the branch picnic. The date for this affair will be announced in April. Joan Mauerman was selected as chairwoman for the 1992 Christmas party to be held Dec. 13 at Egret Hall. National Director Michael Tomcsak spoke to the members on the Association’s special juvenile insurance plan. He noted the plan would be a lasting gift from a grandparent to a grandchild. Get well wishes go to Bill Bartus who is recuperating from surgery at the Bay Pines V.A. Hospital in St. Petersburg. Our deepest sympathy goes to Vilma Molnár on the death of her husband Julius, and to Mary Werrlein on the death of her sister Margaret Tokach. Congratulations to Joe Estock of Lady Lakes, Fla., who received his 50-year membership pin from Director Tomcsak on Feb. 17. Following the business portion of the meeting, everyone enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner prepared by the Cochle House. The delicious pastries were, made by Vi Timmer, Vilma Molnár and Irene Slaughterback. (Vi told us all the calories were taken out of her scrumptious nut tarts.) Our next meeting will be held April 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Egret Hall. We urge all members to attend. For your insurance needs, please call Mike Tomcsak at (813) 858-8071, Tony Noel at (813) 542-7049, or Bob Macker at (813) 992-4474. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President The Rev. David R. Becker, Catholic chaplain at the Huntingdon State Correctional Institution, attended our February meeting and gave the members a thorough idea of all the spiritual work being done to help the inmates at this facility. Our branch then presented to him its annual donation to help him in his spiritual work. At this meeting our branch decided to hold our annual spring communion breakfast once again. More details on this event will be announced soon. The branch’s auditors reported on their recent audit of the branch’s treasury books. They found everything to be in proper order. Thanks go to our branch treasurer and auditing committee for their fine work. We sadly report that David A. DeLeo, a 62-year-member of our Association, died recently at the Garvey Manor Nursing Home. Mr. DeLeo, 86, was a member of the former Catholic Knights of St. George Branch 103 at St. Mark’s. He served many years as secretary to that branch. May he rest in peace. Get well cards were signed by all the members attending our February meeting and sent to those members who had recently taken ill. Our condolences to those members who recently lost loved ones. Why not share your news with the other members of our branch? Call me at 695-0213 so I can include your news in our branch reports. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to all of you on March 17. Branch 8057 Verona, PA By Mary R. Dialoiso Branch 8057 President At our December meeting we held our annual election of officers. We thank those members who have accepted the responsibilities that go with being a branch officer. After the election we enjoyed a covered dish party and played Christmas bingo. Santa had surprise packages for everyone, we had a gift exchange, and all went home with smiles. Sarah Conte served as hostess for our January meeting. We enjoyed Sarah’s delicious cake, played bingo and planned for several trips we’ll take later in the year. Among the events we are considering are Italian Night on board the river boat Majestic; trips to Busch Gardens, the Catskill Mountains and Wildwood; and a one-day surprise trip. Anyone interested in any of these activities should come to the next branch meeting or call Mary at 828-4234. Our Feb. 12 meeting was to include a Valentine’s social and horse races and was to be hosted by Phyllis Cosnotti. We congratulate National President E. E. Vargo on being named the Fraternalist of the Year by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh. Branch 8149 Pittsburgh, PA By Marie Boyle Donahue Branch 8149 Reporter Everyone enjoyed our Christmas party held this past December at Coral Gardens in Swissvale. We also held our annual election of branch officers. Officers for 1992 are: Paul McCaffery, president; Tony Focareta, vice president; Helen McCaffery, secretary; and Betty Slattery, treasurer. Our next branch meeting will be on April 13. Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH By Angela D'Aurora Branch 8164 Vice President Members of Branch 8164 recently attended Mass at St. Anthony Church with Msgr. Gene Mullett as celebrant. Afterwards, they gathered in the rectory hall for a Valentine breakfast and meeting. Matilda Maier and Julia D’Aurora decorated the table in a beautiful Valentine motif. Msgr. Mullett led the group in prayer and Branch President Pete Buffone led the pledge of allegiance. Albert DiFalco, branch secretarytreasurer, presented the branch financial report. Msgr. Mullett spoke on Catholic education courses available for those seeking to learn more about their faith. National Director Louis Fodor reported on the closing of the William Penn Home in Wellsburg, W.Va. We can only hope that good news will be coming before too long about this famous local landmark. At our previous meeting, we elected branch officers for 1992. They are: Mr. Buffone, president; Angela D’Aurora, vice president; Mr. DiFalco, secretary-treasurer; and Mr. DiFalco, Julia D’Aurora and Bus Grossi, auditors. Branch 8286 Philadelphia, PA By Elizabeth Kakas Branch 8286 Vice President Branch 8286, in conjunction with the Hungarian apostolic church, hosted a 75th birthday dinner for Father George Spaits on Feb. 2. Making the event more special was the fact that Father Spaits underwent a serious operation last summer. While still recuperating he made an extra effort to celebrate a Mass commemorating the October 1956 Hungarian revolt. It was his first Mass after his operation. We were honored to count among our dinner guests National President E. E. Vargo and national directors Elmer Toth and Michael Kara. President Vargo presented Father Spaits a plaque from William Penn. He also spoke on the good works the Association is performing for Hungarians both in Hungary and America. We extend our thanks to Miss Betty Szabó who, along with Mrs. Marie Provasnik, arranged and recruited the help needed. Special thanks to Miss Betty Nagy and Mrs. Mary Varga who prepared the stuffed roasted chicken and to Mrs. Katherine Geczi who made the stuffed cabbage. Together, they prepared a delicious and satisfying dinner. Thanks also go out to the many women who prepared the cake and cookies for dessert and to those who served the dinner. We thank the men who set up the tables and helped in many other ways, including Mihály Gergely, John Provasnik Jr., Mike Szaba and George Boros. Articles and photographs for the April issue of the William Penn Life are due in our office by March 20,1992
