For those members who are considering joining our tour group, we hope these articles will convince you that a trip to Hungary is an exciting and rewarding experience you will never forget. We begin our series with a look at Hungary’s capital, Budapest. Budapest is cut by the Danube River into two distinct parts, like the rest of Hungary. To the right of the river is the province of Transdanubia with its gently undulating countryside; to the left lies the Plain stretching as far as the eye can see and beyond. In the same way, the old districts of Buda are found on the right bank of the Danube. Resembling the Transdanubian countryside in character, they are built on the Buda hills interspersed with valleys or flat areas opening to the north or south between the river and the mountains. In the center, nearly parallel with the course of the Danube, stands the plateau of Vár-hegy PITTSBURGH — Anyone wishing to join the fun and excitement aboard the William Penn Caribbean Cruise ’90 must send there reservation in as soon as possible. Our group will be sailing aboard the luxurious ssCosta(558 ft.) crowned by the old Royal Palace. At the foot of the mountains rise the chalky and muddy thermal springs of József - hegy and Gellért-hegy. The districts of Pest, on the Plain and left bank of the Danube, are built on a pebbly clay and Riviera, the 700-foot-long jewel of the Italian Costa Cruise line. Few cities can claim the advantages of both river and mountain, a long past and a living present. In addition, Budapest is the hub of Hungary’s political, economic and cultural life and a celebrated watering place. Historians trace Budapest’s beginnings beyond the first century A.D., when the Romans came and established their military camp of Aquincum. Since that time, the city has been held in turn by the Huns, Ostrogoths, Lombards, Avars, Monguls, Turks, Habsburgs, and Austrians. Finally, in 1867 the Austro- Hungarian Compromise took effect, and six years later, Pest, Buda and Óbuda (Old Buda) were combined to form what is now Budapest. Present-day Budapest is filled with reminders of its rich and colorful history. Its central location in Europe help makes Budapest one of the most exciting cities in the world.
