May 1988, William Penn Life, Page 5 Details completed for July 23 golf tourney CLEVELAND - Just two months remain before the first golfers tee off at the Fifth Annual William Penn Association National Golf Tournament, to be held July 23 at the Brunswick Hills Golf Club near Cleveland. The tournament festivities, highlighted by the hole-in-one contest for a new car, promise to make for a great getaway weekend for William Penn golfers, their spouses and their friends. Not surprisingly, it is the holein-one contest which is generating the most excitement about the tournament. The first golfer to score a hole-in-one during the tournament will win a brand new car courtesy of the Association. But, in addition to the contest, there will be many other activities for golfers and their guests to enjoy. The weekend will open Friday, July 22, with a special hospitality room at the Harley Hotel of Cleveland West, headquarters for this year’s tournament. Golfers may play the Brunswick Hills course on Friday if they wish, or just spend the day and evening renewing old acquaintances and swapping golf stories with other participants. Tournament play will begin Saturday morning at 8 o’clock, with National President Stephen G. Danko hitting the official "teeoff shot” from Number 1 tee. Capping the weekend’s events will be the annual golf awards banquet at the Harley Hotel. Cocktail hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. with dinner to be served at 7:30 p.m. Each banquet guest will receive a favor and is eligible to receive one of the many door prizes that will be given away. The evening’s festivities will once again feature the popular auction raffle for a complete set of golf clubs and golf bag. Banquest seating is limited to 250 persons this year, so those planning to attend are urged to send their reservations as soon as possible. Entry fee for the tournament is $30.00 for William Penn members and $35.00 for non-members. The fee includes greens fees, carts, a golf gift on Number 1 tee and refreshments along the golf course. Hotel accommodations will be at the Harley Hotel of Cleveland West, located at Interstate 71 and Bagley Road. Rooms are $52.00 per night for single or double occupancy. The hotel has beautiful rooms, a fine restaurant and a relaxing swimming pool. All reservations are due at the Home Office by July 1, 1988. This year, golfers will have the option of playing in either a regular handicap division or in the Calloway handicap division. Golfers who would like to use their established handicaps from their home golf courses must submit them with their tournament registration form, along with verification of either their golf club professional or another person authorized to verify handicaps at their golf club. Only those persons submitting handicaps with proper verification will be eligible to play in the regular handicap event. The Calloway division will be scored by eliminating the last two holes of play and limiting the maximum allowable score on any hole to double the par for that hole. For example, on a par five hole, the maximum allowable score will be 10. In addition, tournament golfers will vie for special skill shot prizes this year. These will include awards for the longest drive, longest putt, closest to the pin and closest to the line. There will continue to be a separate women’s division which will include low gross, low net and skill shot awards. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in each division. There will also be many other prizes awarded to players producing the lowest net scores. The 1988 Tournament Committee is headed by National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri and Regional Sales Manager Jeff Ward. Other committee members include Ron Perkins, Gene Toth and Ernie Sarosi, all of Branch 14 Cleveland, and Steve Varga of Branch 18 Detroit. Any other Cleveland area members interested in helping out at this year’s tournament should contact Jeff Ward at 16363 Pearl Road, Strongsville, Ohio 44136 or call (216) 238- 8500. The William Penn National Golf Tournament has established itself as one of the most popular annual events sponsored by the Association. The William Penn Board of Directors is pleased to once again offer to you, our members and friends, a weekend which promises to deliver great fim, great competition and a great gathering of good friends.
