Vargo, Branch Trustee Charles Arbanas, National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri, Branch President William Arbanas, Branch Treasurer Nick Kotik, Branch Secretary Matt Kuehn, Branch Trustee Verna Arbanas and Branch Vice President Albert Telipsky. Branch 18 Detroit MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Secretary Our branch held its Champagne Ball on March 5 at our social club. Music was provided by Emil Jacob and His Orchestra, accompanied by Joe Balint on clarinet. It sure was nice to see Joe play again. Steve Szatmári, our club manager, worked very hard providing a lovely family-style meal for all. Darlene Szatmári had her little dancers perform. After seeing them, you can rest assured that the Branch 18 dancers will go on for a long time. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. On March 12 I surprised my husband, Tom House, by giving him a surprise 50th birthday party. The hard work and all the sneaking was well worth it. Music was provided by Cindy and Jim, who played all music we could relate to. Darlene really outdid herself with her first-ever beautiful birthday dobos törte. Steve again worked very hard on all the food, serving everything from chicken paprikas to American steak. We sure had a great evening. Happy Birthday, honey. I love you. The Ladies Auxiliary is planning its annual card party on April 25. As this is always a sellout, please get your tickets early. You can call Darlene at the club or me for tickets. All the bowling tournament information is in the mail. Please get your teams together and have everything in the mail by April 17. At this writing, Irene Gall Korpák is in Heritage Hospital recovering from surgery. She would love to hear from all her friends. Please get well soon, Irene. We are all praying for you. Happy Easter to all, and I’ll see you soon at the tournament. Branch 27 Toledo, OH By Mary Ivancso Branch 27 Coordinator My, oh, my — the month of March is nearly gone. Are the team captains forming their teams for the 45th National Bowling Tournament to be held in South Bend, Ind. over Memorial Day weekend? I’m looking forward to seeing all of our old friends and meeting new ones. Steve and I were part of a capacity crowd at the Birmingham Library on Tuesday, March 8 for a program entitled, "The Origin of the Magyar-Hungarian Lanuage, Homeland, Migrations and Legends of the Conquest”. A slide show was presented by Dr. Richard R. Perry, professor of Higher Education at the University of Toledo. Many members of Branch 27 were in attendance, including James Percei, former district manager of Branch 27, Ida Bertok and Mitzi King, who told me that she spent one month in Anchorage, Alaska. Mitzi also said she is now a grandmother — Shane Russell Drew, bom Oct. 22,1987 in Anchorage. Proud parents are Rosalie and Steve Drew. Congratulations! Alice and Joe Horvath had a five-day vacation in Florida recently. Alice was in Tampa for a three-day workshop on machine quilting. This class was for instructors and teachers only. Alice recently opened a quilt shop called "Busy Bee Quilting” on East Broadway. She will be selling cotton fabrics and supplies for the quilt maker. Stop in and see her. Frank and Grace Csiszár vacationed in Florida for several months with Ethel Zeller. On their way home to Greenbush, Mich., they stopped in and visited with us. We had not seen them for more than four years and we talked and talked and talked. Gizi showed pictures of their granddaughter, Ashley Ziya. Such a pretty girl! The Rev. Martin Hernady is on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. More than 50 women from the neighborhood went to visit the Holy Land, including Fritz and Mary Szollosi, Mary Ann Kovács, and Margie Juhasz. John "Ace” Nagy, Branch 27 president for many years, called to tell how much he enjoyed reading the column. John and his lovely wife Eleanor have eight grandchildren! Joe Joo is home recuperating. Joe spent more than a week in the hospital. Glad you’re home, Joe. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family of Steve "Sally” Gall, Sr. The newest member of Branch 27 is Maureen Farkas. Remember—call me at 691- 9641 for your insurance and other needs. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter The poinsettias haven’t faded away and here we are celebrating the great feast of Easter with all the lilies, hyacinths and tulips as well as that good Hungarian food. The seasons come and the seasons go, so enjoy! Happy Easter to all of you, and may you see many more of the holiest holidays that makes it all worthwhile. Regardless of what you have seen and heard in the world, keep the faith. ("Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9). Get well wishes to Father John Turk who is at the home of his sister, Mary Burkosky. We all wish you the best. Don’t know why we all must take a turn at the "downs” in life (perhaps we never will know). Get well wishes go out also to the sick in hospitals and rest homes. Hope that conditions improve for you as well as for all the elderly in our midst. A visit, letter, card, or phone call does a lot. It was good to see our William Penn members at the annual 1848 Hungarian War of Independence Celebration—the Szabó boys, the Novaks, the Frank Schauers, the Edward Kinnicks, to name a few. The celebration was held at St. Stephen of Hungary Hall. It helped give our new pastor, Father Frank Lehnerd, an insight on what Hungarians are all about. The American-Hungarian Federation of Churches and Societies is to be congratulated on a wonderful program. Melinda Gajdan sang a series of Hungarian songs, accompanied by Hegedűs Kalman on the accordian. Their duets echoed the songs of our forefathers down through the years, and the audience participation moved our hearts. You could hear the longing in their voices for a free homeland. One-hudred forty years is a long, long time. Mahoning County Sherrif Edward Nemeth, the English speaker, opened his speech with "Kedves Magyarok,” and in conclusion quoted a phrase: "Chains rust away but hope never dies.” That’s what it is all about, dear friends. Also on the program were Youngstown Mayor Pat Ungaro; Campbell, Ohio Mayor James Vargo; Father Pal Bolvary, the Hungarian speaker; Vince Kepes, who recited Petofi’s Nemzeti Dal; the St. Stephen dancers under Ruth Fabian; and Agi Szalay, with a recitation of a Kossuth poem. Maria Goda, president of the Federation, was the mistress of ceremonies again. Congratulations to you all on an outstanding afternoon—the program, the coffee and cookies, plus that perennial favorite, dobos törte, donated by the American-Hungarian Club of Donald Avenue, and all the sponsors with their ad contributions. Which reminds us—give Gabe Nameth a call for your insurance needs. You can reach him by phone at 792-8145 or by mail at 2230 Bears Den Road, Youngstown, Ohio 44511. He is always ready and willing to help you. Branch 44 Akron, OH Branch 44 recently provided three holiday baskets, complete with toys for the children and personal products for the adults, to needy families in the Akron- Barberton area. A basket was given also to the Akron Rescue Mission which feeds the poor in Akron. Seeing the smiles of the children and the light in the eyes of the adults was stronger than the "thank you” each parent said. The February meeting was held Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, and business for the upcoming year was discussed. Activities for the spring were identified and a trip to Pittsburgh was planned for the branch officers. Our thanks to National President Stephen G. Danko for meeting with us. The March meeting was held on March 20 at the CYO at Archbishop Hóban High School in Akron. Pysanka Egg decorating and Easter egg decorating for all members was scheduled. April 10 brings "Spring Fling” to Branch 44. Members should circle that date on their calendars. All members were sent a questionnaire in the February and March newsletters. Responses are coming in, but ALL members are requested to take a few minutes and send in the questionnaire. Let us know what you think.
