William Penn Life, 1984 (19. évfolyam, 1-4. szám)

1984-07-01 / 3. szám

At our election of officers for 1984, Charlie was re-elected an Auditor and Marge was re-elected as Secretary. Both have “long track records” with William Penn. In fact, Charlie met Marge in the 1940's at the Columbus Hungarian Verhovay Club House, which then was managed by Marge’s parents, David and Margaret George. Back in those days, Charlie was working at the Boso and Son Garage and living on Columbus’ south side. Being among all the Hungarian families during that period, Charlie became an “honorary Hungarian” and spent a lot of time at the Verhovay Club. Charlie and Marge were married in 1950 and since then have raised seven children (four sons and three daughters), all of whom are William Penners—Patricia Haehn (who later went on to become a 1984 William Penn bowling star), Debra Lewis, Diane Walker, Chuck Jr., Bradley, Michael, and Christopher. Their new granddaughter Renee is also a William Penn member, continuing the family tradition. Charlie spent 28 years with the Columbus fire department, retiring as a captain. Now in “retirement”, Charlie is back at work at the Boso and Son Garage, 485 East Kossuth Street, in Columbus. In addition to a continuing interest in the William Penn Association, both are active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, with Charlie presently the Commander of the VFW Auxiliary. Also, fishing takes up some of the time of the Boso family these days, with Charlie finding the fish in such places as Canada, Florida, and Maryland. And, Marge being the expert in cooking them—Hungarian style. This reminder—if you have any questions about branch activities in which you can join in or about appropriate life or home insurance, contact Branch Coordinator, Irene Voss, between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M., weekdays at 443-7797. Our next two regular branch meetings will be held September 12 and December 12 at 8 P.M. at Leonardo’s Place, 1374 Parsons Avenue, corner of Frebis. In today’s “mobile society”, which Vance Packard once called a “nation of strangers”, we are sure that there are many William Penners of various ages who have moved to Columbus from elsewhere, but who have never made the "bold move” to find out what being a William Penn member in Columbus, Ohio is “all about”. Regardless of what branch you may officially belong to, if you are in Columbus on one of our “meeting nights” or during one of our "daytime happenings”, do pay us a visit. You will be among friends. Thank you to those of you who chose to visit us in Columbus for the 41st Annual William Penn National Bowling Tournament. Recent U.S. census figures show that you visited what is now the largest city in Ohio and the 19th largest city in the nation. Dynamic Columbus is one of America’s fastest growing cities outside of the “sunbelt,” so we hope you enjoyed your stay. It has been 22 years since the last William Penn national bowling tournament was held in Columbus, so we trust that the Association’s next visit will be much earlier than the. year 2006, which would be 22 years from now. Fraternally, A1 Bártfay Reporter/Publicity Director (614) 422-4985 1980 Belcher Drive, B-32 Columbus, Ohio 43224 Branch 189 Alliance, Ohio Two very enjoyable events took place at our William Penn Club here in Alliance. We are proud of all of you. The 41st National Bowling Tournament is a thing of the past now. We, of Alliance, Ohio have nothing but praise for the bowling committee for their fine and smooth handling of the tournament. The Columbus Square Bowling Palace is indeed a great bowling establishment. They are to be honored for the special treatment shown to us all. A special “thank you’’ to National Secretary Gus Nagy and John Gaal of Branch 129, Columbus for coming to the aid of the Branch 189 girls who were in distress. The fraternalism shown us was certainly appreciated. The bowlers of Branch 189 were special guests of Mr. and Mrs. David Mainewaring at their home in Columbus. The Mainewarings are former Alliance residents. David Mainewaring Dave Mainewaring and his lovely wife, Goldie. was head basketball coach at the Alliance High School in the 1950’s. It’s the first time the Alliance High School won the State Championship in basketball. This was accomplished under David Mainewaring’s coaching! In his basketball coaching he coached the great quarterback Lenny Dawson. In 1958 to 1963 David was elected to Mayor of Alliance, Ohio. In the latter part of 1963, Mr. Mainewaring was appointed to Registor of Ohio Motor Vehicles in Columbus by, then Governor, James Rhoads. He is now associated with the Ohio Auto Dealers in Columbus, Ohio. Mrs. Mainewaring is the former Goldie Bilcze. The Bilcze family has been well known in Alliance for many, many years. There was much reminiscing at the Mainewaring home as we wives listened to the “boys” talk of the 28
