where a building was being built. This site was to be the “Hungarian Hall’’ or which is now known as the William Penn Club. Mike was just 10 years old at the time and since he loved horses, he helped the gypsy haul bricks, a wagon load at a time, from a brick yard which was a mile away. His sturdy little legs pulled the chain dump wagon and dumped the bricks in a pile. Little did he realize then, that at the age of 69 he would still be around this building for which he carried all those bricks!! Mike Szekely Mike Szekely is one of the familiar faces at the club daily. He said he has so many memories of the “Hungarian Hall’’, the “Verhovay Club” and now its final name “William Penn Club”. He recalls the Hungarian dinners cooked by Mrs. Louis Tosha, her helpers, Mrs. Steve Korosy, Mrs. James Sera, Mrs. Glenn Rhoads, Mrs. Ingatz Bara and oh, so many many people who gave so much of their time and life to have fraternalism shared by all and the fraternalism is still being shared here in the year of 1983! In the year of 1930, the Hungarian language was spoken more than the English language at the then Hungarian Hall. There was a member named Joe Dugan, who visited the club daily as Mike Szekely did. The manager of the club at that time was a man named George Toth. George would talk Hungarian to Joe Dugan. However Joe wasn’t Hungarian but it became natural for him to pick up a phrase here and there. He even learned Eleanor and Joe Dugan to pick up on some of the Hungarian songs. Some nice and some kind of spicy!! He couldn’t carry on a lengthy conversation but enough to make people wonder about Joe’s nationality. Here Joe says it’s the year of 1983 and there are not many of the old teachers left but he still remembers what George Toth taught him. We here at Br. 189 enjoy your stories of Mr. Toth and his teaching you the Hungarian language. Old memories are something to cherish aren’t they??!! Our social dinner was a huge success and well attended. Three hundred people were served a delicious swiss steak dinner cooked by Penny Duruttya and her helpers Jennie Carman, Shelley and Kelley Summers, Lori McClung, Andrea Duruttya, Theresa Miller and Mary Mercer.
