WHY JOHNNY CAN’T READ Why can’t Johnny read? This question causes increasing concern today. Maybe the answer, or part of it, lies close to home. The bedtime story hour was, at one time, a tradition for many families. Now television usurps this reading time. Mom or Dad stashes the youngster in front of the t.v. set instead of taking time for the bedtime story. Learning to read is a beginning step in a child’s mental development. Reminders to care for your child’s bodily health are plentiful and important. Just as important is his mental development. Reading to a child directly helps his reading ability. It also helps his overall language development. A side benefit, which should not be overlooked, is that reading becomes an important part of a child’s life. You help your child become a “reader” by exposing him to books early and often. The question “why can’t Johnny read?” may have a simple answer. He follows the example set for him. Through you, your child can learn to value books, find enjoyment, and grow mentally. National President Charles, Governor Leader, Insurance Commissioner SHEPPARD.
