"(67) BRIEF PUBLICATIONS 1. Symposium on irrigation in Verona, 16th March, 19(j3. By K. Perényi, Civ. Eng. (For the Hungarian text see pp. . . .) The traditional symposium on irrigation was held again during the International Fair Verona by the Centro Internazionale per gli Studi Sulla Irrigazione a Pioggia (International Study Center on Sprinkling Irrigation). This year it was dr. A. Degan, General Secretary, who delivered a lecture under the title „Water rates and the problem of water application in the planning of irrigation systems". Discussion was opened by Mr. G. Trabucchi, Italian Finance Minister (Fig. 1). In recent years the study of standard water rates assumed special significance a ) for the selection of critical periods for the plants, b ) because of the increased costs due to high delivery heads, c) because of unfavourable soil conditions, d) because of the decreasing losses in pipeline irrigation and e ) because of „application as desired" principle. Consequently monthly scheduling must be attempted in the determination of the water demand of the plant, with due allowance for évapotranspiration. The peak demand of the plant should also be taken into consideration. The efficiency of irrigation can be improved by the exact determination of standard water rates. 1. Major dams in Italy. By F. Ivicsics, Civ. Eng. (For the Hungarian text see pp . . .) The VHth Congress on Large Dams was held lately in Rome. It has deemed therefore appropriate to describe the more significant ones from among the 404 dams built altogether in Italy. From among the dams 212 are of the gravity type, 95 are arch dams, while 67 arc earth and rock-fill structures. 84 gravity dams are mortar-bound masonry dams, 105 are concrete dams and 23 are made of hollow concrete blocks. The arch dams are divided into 63 thin-shell dams, 23 gravity dams and 3 are jointed. From among the embankment dams 44 are made of earth, 23 of rock. The aggregate storage space created by the 404 dams amounts to 7.5 thousand million cu.m. Most of the dams have been built in the Alps (Fig. 1). It is interesting to note that the majority of the large dams is of the arched type. Thin-shell arch dams are usually designed on the basis of model tests. Great care is devoted to the abutments of the dam. Concrete is made of a mix containing 220 to 270 kg/cu.m pozzolana cement. Instruments and devices for checking the stability of the dam are incorporated in great number in each structure. Particulars and construction features of 30 major dams are described and photographs are attached from 9. 3. .Model test on the flow recording seetion of a sediment transporting small watercourse. By O. Ilaszpra, Civ. Eng. ('For the Hungarian text see pp. . .) A considerable problem on sediment transporting small watercourses is the design of flow recording sections which are relatively little affected by sediment. At the Hydraulic Laboratory of the Hungarian Besearch Institute for Water Besources several alternatives for the established section on one of the watercourses were investigated (Fig. 1 — 3) and suggestions were made for the modification of the structure and for the design of structures under similar conditions. Investigations resulted in a type which is less affected by the deposition of sediment. KURZBEBICHTE 1. Dipl. Ing. К. Percnyi: Ucwässcrungstag in Verona. (16. März 1963) (Ungarischer Text Seite . . .) Das vor 10 Jahren gegründete Centro Internazionale per gli Studi sulla Irrigazione a Pioggia (Internationale Zentrale für Beregnungsstudien) arrangierte seine übliche Konferenz auch heuer während der Internationalen Messe in Verona. In diesem Jahr hielt Generalsekretär Dr. A. Degan einen Vortrag über „Die Frage der
