only on SLASTENENKO's description . According him» the aoale and fin-ray formulae of Gobio albi pinna tua vladykovl FANG conform with those of Gobio albiplnnatue beling i SLASTEKENKO , with differences tracable to only four features. BANARESCU deduced his findings from the comparison of the measurement data referring to the Dnyeper specimens as published by SLASTENENKO with those of his own Roumanian, and ohlefly Temes specimens. A study of his paper reveals that he did not make any signiflcancy calcul at ions, submit ting only the „mean* values in his tables. To identify the Hungarian specimens by their correct name, I had now to decide the following problems: 1. does ths population from Hungary agrse with thoss from Roumania, as the nearest ones geographycally? 2. do the Roumanian populations actually differ from the one of the river Dnyeper? To decide the question, I had at my disposal the papers of BANARESCU and SLASTENENKO, then 36 specimens from the river Temes, received from and identified by BANARESCU as Gobio alblplnnatus vladykov l ,and the home specimens. According to BANARESCU, the differences between the two subspecies appear in but four measurement ratios /the specimens from Roumania have smaller eyes, their heads and the preorbital distance are greater, eventually their bodies higher/. I attempted therefore to compute, by variation statistical calculations, the signiflcancy of these differences. When comparing the specimens, the numbers of fin-rays and scales as well as every other morphological features of my fishes corresponded to those of the Roumanian ones. The osteological examinations gave the same results, - no differences were found. Ae will be seen later, even the measurement data agreed. On this basis, 1 had to regard the Hungarian an! Roumanian populations as subspecifically identical ones . In the case of the Roumanian and Dnyeper populations, T could re">y on the variation statistical evaluation of the
