RISSO /1826/ described a new species / Barbus meridiona lis / from the region of Nice and from the mountainous brooks of the Alps aE follows: „Le corps de ce poisson est oblong, renfelé, un peu arrondi, d'une couleur olivâtre sur le dos, argentée, à nuances bleuâtres sur les cotes, et d'un peu mat sur le ventre; ses écailles sont striées, dentelées, fort adhérentes à la peau ; le museau eBt très avancé,à barbillons rouges ; la mâchoire supérieure est plue longue que l'inférieure; la nuque est plane; les yeux petits, d'iris doré, les narines ont deux orifices; la ligne latérale est un peu courbe, suivie de petits points noirs-, une légère teinte rouge oolore les nageoires; la caudale est fourchue, lisér-áe de noir." In his work published in 1832-1841 BONAPARTE described a small-bodied barbel species / Barbus caninus / giving as one of its characteristics the absence of the, serrated spines: „ Barbue capite cvatopyramidali ,longiore altltudine corporis, quintum long tu:inis vix superante; spatio interoculari vix aequante ocu L - maximum, antepositum ; radio osseo pinnae dorsali;- gracillirro, vix serrulate • squamis magnis rotundis. 11, P. 17, '/. 8, C. 19. Lin. lat. squ. 50 aer. 17 /9/ 7. Piemonte laghi e ruseelli." In the comprehensive work of CUVTER-VALENCIENNE /1642/ VALENCIENNE expressed his opinion that Barbus meridional ig RISSO and Barbus caninus BONAPARTE belong to the sane species. In the same study Valencieme introduced two new f orma :-Barbus çgnalil from Perugia and Sarbus peloponnensius from Greece. The number of scales of the latter species in, according to him, about 55 and the dorsal fin has no serrated spinas.
