E "a 1 1 News From Northwestern Ohio 1 w] I BRANCH 27 TOLEDO, OHIO | By Stephen J. Ivancso | A challenge has come from the bowlers of Branch 27, Toledo to Marge Nemeth and New York for being called sit-me-downs! As I hear by way of the grapevine, a committee fs being formed to the extent that if Marge shows up at the next bowling tournament she will have no opportunity for sit-downs at the dance! This city of champions will see to it! The bowlers here will want her to remember “Beautiful Ohio” and forget the “Sidewalks of New York.” Talking about beautiful Ohio, the other Sunday afternoon John Mokri, our very competent treasurer (who just returned from a renewed visit to New York), and yours truly, went westward to Delta, Ohio. There we were the guests of the Steve and Vincent Turi’s. These people are in the farming business and they all like their corn tall. On the trip to the Turi’s we found out that the whole family is 100% Verhovay. So naturally the latest addition, a baby girl born to the Vincent Turi’s, was signed up as a Verhovay member too. On the journey homeward, we stopped at the home of Mr. and M!rs. Charles Szabó. Their guests were Mrs. Vissi of Rossford, Ohio, Mrs. Steve Szabó of Swanton, Ohio, and Mr. & Mrs. William Vissi of Toledo. As we read the Verhovay Journal, we find that other branches have golf tournaments. We here in Toledo have some very fine golfers, Julius Feyes and Richard Sendi. One Friday evening, being golf nite, yours truly, with “Rip” Tinta our singles champion, went to the Collins Park Golf Course. Never having golfed, I had to learn from the beginning, but soon found cut why “Rip” threw his club over the road and down the fairway. After nine holes, I thought I was the winner because I had started out with three balls and ended up with four, while the others were looking for their third ball. I came to the conclusion that after nine holes of golf I’d much rather umpire a nine inning ball game, leave the golfing game to Feyes, Sendi and Tinta. I hear a lot of fish stories, but for the best ones, if some of you come to Toledo, be sure to look up Julius Vargo or Bill Szirotnyak. These two are the fishing champs — they can catch fish under the bridge — over the bridge — and in or out of water! When these two gents get together, one has to stand aside and take it all in. Julius Vargo is the ice fisher who was on Camel News on television last year. Out Sandusky Bay one Monday afternoon, the ice broke and about fifty fishers started floating out to the middle of the lake. We can thank the Coast Guard for having gotten the boys off safely without tragedy, and this way we can hear more fish stories from Jula. Some out-of-state Verhovay friends looked us up recently — Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dudás from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. I met too Emery (House of David) Boroski, who also is from Johnstown. I asked Emery how he made out at the bowling tournament in New York. His answer was, “No good.” Emery is a former Toledo boy who now makes his home in Johnstown, sports a bowling average of 200, year. in and year out! Well, I had better put away my typewriter and get some bowling practice. The Verhovay boys are going to bowl in the Toledo Times Classic — the fastest league in town! More news about this in the next issue of the Verhovay Jöürnal.
