VOL. XXXVII. SEPTEMBER 15, 1954 51 NUMBER 8. PLAQUE OF NATIONAL PRESIDENT The John Bencze 25th Anniversary Membership Campaign began July 1, 1954. An innovation has been attached to this latest drive for new members. Each field under the direction of its supervisor is permitted to conduct the campaign in the manner it deems most satisfactory and to award its own particular prizes. An example of this individual initiative is the John Bencze plaque, reproduced above, the work of George Gach, New York sculptor and painter. This plaque will be given to every member of Field VII, whose Supervisor is Leslie J. Dus, who recommends at least five new members during the campaign. Six Members Receive Illustrious Citation Beckley, West Virginia was the site of a very important Verhovay fraternal gathering, August 28, 1954 when six worthy members of our society received the Illustrious Citation and the Gold Medal of the Association. Those receiving these awards are shown above, left to right: John Czikora, Vice President of Branch 25; Emery Szuch, Manager of Branch 25; John Bernath, former President of Branch 25; Louis Gall, Manager of Branch 482; Moses Domonkos, member of Branch 482 and former Manager of Branch 511, Detroit, Michigan; Louis Kazvinczky, President of Branch 482. ■■ Branches 25 and 482 of Mt. Hope and Beckley, respectively, were the branches observing their anniversaries. NOTICE TO PHOTOGRAPH SENDERS The practice of returning photographs which were published in the Verhovay Journal is no longer in force. All photographs submitted for reproduction in the Verhovay Journal become its property and can not be returned. This eliminates disappointment to the senders because of damage or loss. Two-Branch West Virginia Celebration Favorable Event The joint event held by West Virginia Branches 25, and 482, of Mt. Hope and Beckley, respectively, was another grand and successful Verhovay affair as is typical of such occasions when held by our solid membership in that famous coal producing state. Branch 25 celebrated its fiftieth founding annniversary while it was the fifteenth year since the organization of Branch 482. The first named branch was formerly located in Glen Jean and the second in Red Dragon. Manager of Branch 25 is Emery Szuch and manager of Branch 482 Louis Gall. The program took place Saturday evening, August 28, 1954, and was held in the Moose Hall, Beckley. At the affair wás National President John Bencze to whom special honor was paid by both branches for his 25th anniversary as officer at the Home Office. His anniversary now identifies our newest membership campaign. Honored too were Verhovayans of long meritorious service who received the Illustrious .Citation and the Gold Medal. Group singing of the National Anthem opened the program, Miklós Thegze-Gerber accompanied. The invocation was read by the Rev, Biggett of Mt. Hope Baptist Church. The first speech was made by Congressman Robert C. Byrd from the 6th District of West Virginia. The good congressman spared no words in voicing his appreciation for the law-abiding Hungarians of his state, who, he stated, are helping to build a. better state and a better nation. Here a pleasant consequence happened. Field Assistant to the National President Elmer Charles, who quite capably filled the versatile duties of master of ceremonies, in his ever Verhovay consciousness invited Congressman Byrd to join our ranks. Congressman Byrd accepted and then and there was signed up by Field Supervisor Gus G. Nagy. Congratulations to Congressman Byrd on his wise decision and to affable Field Assistant to the National President Elmer Charles on his alertness! Branch 482 now has a congressman on its roster. Next speaker was National President John Bencze. He outlined the progress made by Verhovay over a period of years. It was an interesting speech quite informative, especially to our newer members. The National President’s address was made in Hungarian. The members of the two branches now had occasion to hear their own field leader, Field Supervisor Gus G. Nagy. Branches 25 and 482 fall under Field II, the area under the jurisdiction of Field Supervisor Nagy. His theme was the advice that all the members cooperate in making the John Bencze 25th Anniversary Membership Campaign as fruitful as possible. Speaking in Hungarian, Andrew Fay Fisher, Pittsburgh publisher and editor of the Hungarian Miner’s Journal (Magyar Bányászlap), feted the honored award members. Presentation of the Illustrious Citation and the Gold Medal was made by West Virginia’s popular Verhovay Director John Vizzi of Logan. He was assisted by National President Bencze.
