July 21, 1954. Verhovay Journal PAGE 11 VERHOVAY YOUNGSTOWN BRANCHES: 21, 108, 364, 514. CONGRATULATIONS This year our Verhovay girls really brought home the proverbial bacon by copping some of the honors at the Bowling Tournament in New York. Congratulations are in order to Freida Bennish, who- captured the Individual Events in the Women Division, to Margaret Turner and Mary Ashley, who took the Two-Women Events. These three gals were awarded each one of the nicest trophies that one would ever want adorning a mantlepiece. Our gal Freida also came in second place ip the All Events, just two pins away from taking first prize. Just before Freida and the family left for their long vacation to the West Coast, she stopped in our downtown office to get a glimpse of the coveted prize. Irene Kady came in fourth place in the All-Events, also ended up in the money in the Individual-Roll offs. All in all, our girls did fairly well, with Millie Clair, Mary Wittway, Margaret Bunchy, Irene Gianfraneesco, Anne Frew, C. Gaal, Carole Russo, also in the money. The men didn’t do quite as well, but they too picked up some of the prize money, with Andy Blasko, Andy Miglets, Steve Simon, Mario Reda and Phil Houser sharing in the harvest. The big thing is that everyone had a great time. And that’s for sure. PICNIC Field Supervisor Gabe Nameth has announced that Verhovay Youngstown will revive the once thriving and prosperous Sports Club that has seemed to fall by the wayside. The first big shindig planned is a picnic next month, August 29th. to be held out at the Whipperwill Grove on Crum Rd.' This Sunday affair will be the kick-off for the Sports Club, which will consist of all members from the four local branches, with officers to be elected. We will be recruiting help from the various branches to make this initial venture a success. So let’s all pitch in to make this Sports Club a big thing here in Youngstown, Who knows what it can turn into. Some day we might even outshine our neighbors in Springdale, Pa., who really have a strong Verhovay, with a beautiful new hall to show the results of their efforts. Remember if we are to make a good start towards having a Sports Club worthy of it’s name we’ll have to start by going ALL-OUT in the picnic. Come to enjoy yourselves. Bring your families and invite some of your friends. August . 29th, ..Whipperwill Grove. Crum Rd., plenty of food and drinks, games and a play ground for the kiddies, music and dancing in the evening to a fine orchestra. Come out in the afternoon and stay as long as you like. But do come and have fun. The donation is 50c. You’ll never miss it, besides most likely you will spend more during the course of the day. We need the money!!! VERHOV AY-GO-ROUND Wedding bells will soon be ringing for Margie Bunchy. The best of everything from the gang. . . Mary Wittway says she had a fine time taking the sites of New York in, every time she mentions it we get quite a few chuckles out of her .. . The Bunchy girls thought the Hungarian music was all right, but they will still take some the good ole “home grown” music that we have here in Youngstown ... Andy Blasko may still be seen and heard talking about the New York trip ... A trio of Verhovayans seen around town are: Dick Safron, Bob Palotsee and Jim Mislay. Brother Jim has just recently returned home from the Army, and the boys are having a welcome home party in his behalf at the Tomcsak’s summer cottage, Lake Milton ... Boy that Springdale, Pa. gang surely knows how to put out the welcome mat for all the fellow Verhovayans. We don’t recall when we were treated so royally in the past as when that crowd placed out. the fraternalism in capital letters. Springdale is the home of Pat Nameth, our Field Super’s everloving ... John Phillips from the Home Office will vouch for me in stating that the Springdale people are good people . .. Elmer Charles, the Field Director,.asserts they have the best Verhovay Home in the organization. You know, we’re inclined to agree with him because he’s rite. HEARTFELT LOSS Branch 21 has just recently lost its president with the passing away of Mr. August Habodasz. In our humble estimation, he was really one of the greatest man in our book. Not only will Branch 21 feel the loss with a heavy heart, but also the rest of the branches in this locale, for hi was a fine example of what the term fraternalism means and stands for. We could go on and on and record the many “firsts” he instilled into Verhovay here in Youngstown for in the seventy-one years of living he crowded more good years in than any man we have ever known. To us he was a dear friend and a wise and kind advisor. Verhovay Youngstown has lost a great man, while God has gained a good soul. May he rest in peace.
