PAGE 12 Verhovay Journal April 21, 1954 VERHOVAY MEMBER COUNTY SHERIFF ON THE ALERT It’s a friendly hand shake and a smiling- group above. Left to right are: Mrs. Stephen C. Wukovits, about to hand over the Verhovay certificate of membership to the handsome sheriff; Mrs. Julia E. Lukacs, secretary to Sheriff Hipsak and president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of Branch 132, South Bend, Indiana. Mr. Hipsak is sheriff of Saint Joseph County, in which county South Bend and Branch 132 are located. The genial law officer is not only popular among the Hungarians but also is one of the most liked officials in the county, especially among the laboring class. Out of 47 employees under the jurisdiction of Sheriff Hipsak, 11 are of Hungarian extraction. Pfc. Robert L. Pater, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pater of Republic Avenue, Indianola, Pa., has been selected for duty with the newly organized Demilitarized Zone Police consisting of hand-picked Marines from units of the First Marine Division. The twenty year old Marine, a member of Branch 296, Springdale, Pa., has been in the service for one year. Mission of the special police force, as established by the truce, is to patrol the 2,000 meter zone between the south demilitarized zone border and the demarcation line dividing the United Nations and Chinese portions of the buffer zone. Varga’s was the first 300 after Crown Prince started its contest. Each member of Varga’s Harmony Farms-Keller Dairy team received $25, owner Bill Seidensticker of Swan $100 and sponsor Anton F.
