VOL. XXXV. MAY 21, 1952 5 1 NO. 5 Welcome Verhovay Members to Columbus Where The .setting- is but a stage and the Verhovay members will present thenyearly “smash hit,” the Ninth Annual Verhovay National Ten Pin Tournament. W th due apologies to the great English poet and dramatist, William Shakespeare, we thought it fitting to borrow this descriptive expression because it applies so well to the biggest event that has ever been held in this country in Hungarian American circles. The people of Columbus have been working feverishly for the last six months preparing the stage for the many actors who will come from all parts of the nation to participate in Verhovay’s most spectacular sports play. The title of this year’s play is NATIONAL VERHOVAY FELLOWSHIP DAYS — because this 1952 play and all that pertains to it shall stress the LI VINO BROTHERLY LOVE THAT CIRCULATES THROUGHOUT THE GREAT VERHOVAY BODY — THE MEMBERSHIP. The Columbus committee headed by David George, branch manager, Louis Miller, branch president, both officers of Branch 129, also the vicepresident of the branch, Andrew Guyer, Attorney Joseph Fodor, and the National Tournament Executive Committee, join hands in extending- to all our members and our Verhovay friends a warm and sincere welcome to our magnificent event of May 29-30-31. When zero hour comes the Columbus Committee and the National Toumsiaemt Executive Committee will be ready to open the doors to the FRIENDLY CITY OF COLUMBUS, and everything will be done to make your stay at the capital city of progressive Ohio one that you will remember vividly for many years. Mayor James A. Rhodes will add his welcome when he will opbn the tournament Thursday evening, May 29, at 7:00 P. M., at the Riverview Recreation by rolling the first ball down the alleys. GOVERNOR AND MRS. FRANK J. LAUSCHE TO ADDRESS MEMBERS ON MAY 31 Governor Frank J. Lausche was kind enough to invite the members of the National Tournament Executive Committee and the Columbus General Committee to assure us personally that he and his charming wife would be with u- Saturday evening. May 31. The Verhovay members who talked over certain tournament plans with Governor Lausche were very courteouslv received. It was a pleasure to hear the Governor praise the members of our Association for their diligent efforts to become better Americans without forgetting that their ancestral background has contributed a fair share to •the melting pot of American culture. He expressed his admiration in their struggles to help free Hungary and the other European nations now in tha grip of Communist imperialism. Governor Lausche was presented a Certificate of Honor and the Gold Emblem of the Association. (Photograph elsewhere in this issue.) HOTEL DESHLER-WALLÍCK PREPARED FOR TWO DANCES, BEAUTY CONTEST AND BUFFET DINNER The congenial manager of beautiful Hotel Deshler-Wallick has given his word to the National Tournanlent Executive Committee that the hotel can accommodate as many guests as the tournament will lure to Columbus. Much of the hotel will be taken over by the Verhovay members, and the tournament guests will be given every consideration to make their stay pleasant and convenient. The management at the hotel recently agreed to turn over the Crystal Ballroom for the Friday night, May 30 Night of Budapest Dance and tHq beauty contest. Original plans had called for these in the Ionian Night Club, i but the many reservations made it imperative to Secure the larger ballroom. The Crystal Ballroom will be specially set up “cabaret style.” Plenty of space will be provided for dancing to the tunes of America’s top Hungarian American orchestra—Ziggy Bela of Detroit. (See picture elsewhere.) Selection of the Verhovay beauty queen and her attendants will be made at the Friday night affair. The judges of the contest say that both radio and television are interested in this beauty pageant. A publicity firm will film the events of our Friday night danee. They are requesting the members to wear Hungarian costumes that night in preparation for a section in the Sunday newspaper rotogravure section. So please, men and women, boys and girls, dress up in your Hungarian costumes for the May 30. Night of Budapest Dance.
