April 18, 1951 VerhovayJournal PAGE 13 The Eighth Annual Verhovay National Ten-Pin Tournament MAY 5-6, 1951 LAKEVIEW RECREATION 3239 NORTH CLARK STREET — CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Tournament Headquarters: HOTEL SHERMAN, Randolph & Clark St., Chicago, Illinois. National Executive Tournament Committee: ANDREW KOVÁCS, M.D., Vice-President, — Cleveland, 0. RICHARD PHILLIPS, Director, — Allen Park, Mich. MIKE KOROSY, Director, — Alliance, O. Tournament Administration: Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, MR. JOHN SABO, Nat’l Auditor, Verhovay Building, 436 Fourth Ave., Pittsburgh 19, Pa. ANOTHER NEW RECORD “A New Record” — last year’s Tournament schedules announced, but ‘‘Another New Record” declares the title ‘Pop’ R. R. Diliinger, Tournament Secretary, put over the schedules of this year’s Tournament. That each successive Verhovay tournament attracted a larger group of participants than the previous ones and that this year’s tournament will break all previous records in that respect, is irrefutable proof of the consistently increasing popularity of Verhovay’s annual sports event. Let’s hope that this tournament in Chicago will produce also new records — in scores ... in entertainment, fun, fellowship and fraternal understanding. Here is the record;-breaking all previous records, in participation: MEN’S DIVISION 67 Five-Man Teams 177 Two-Man Teams 359 Individuals WOMEN’S DIVISION 25 Five-Woman Teams 67 Two-Woman Teams 134 Individuals Indeed, this is another new record! And another new record has been established by the bowling teams entered in the Chicago tournament: every application arrived in time, — every application has been completed correctly, in strict accordance with the Rules and Regulations, — every application was accompanied by the full and correctly executed forms and remittances, — and as a result, none of the applications had to be returned for correction or additional information, — all of which has greatly helped the Tournament Administration and the Tournament Secretary in their task. Since such faultless cooperation and compliance with th‘fe rules has never before occurred, this, too, must be recognized as Another New Record, — made by the bowlers themselves. Congratulations and thanks to all of you! A NEW RECORD IN PRIZES AND TROPHIES In this all-handicap tournament all teams will have an equal chance to carry home one. or more of the coveted trophies and one or more of the numerous prizes. Every bowler knows that the FRANK BROGLEY. MEMORIAL TROPHY’ will be awarded to the Team Event winner in the Men’s Division and that the. ALBERT B. ARI MEMORIAL TROPHY will be awarded to the Team Event winner in the Womens Division. There is one important change, however, in that the championship trophies will be awarded on the basis of total scores, that is actual scores plus handicap, not like in the past when these trophies were awarded to the teams scoring the highest actual number of pins, without! the handicap. Though the Rules and Regulations provided only for these trophies, the National Tournament Executive Committee, in view of the splendid cooperation of the bowlers, decided to award many more trophies and here again another new record will be established. While the Rules and Regulations provided only for ‘suitable awards’ for the members of the championship winning Five-Man and Five-Woman teams, this has been changed by the Executive Committee so that each member of the champion teams in the Men’s Division as well as in the Women’s Division will receive an individual championship trophy in addition to the Frank Brog- Jey and Albert B. Ari Memorial trophies to be awarded to the championship winning teams. Also, the winners of each and every event, in both the Men’s and Women’s Division will receive trophies. All of which is Another New Record. Nor will the money awards stay behind this impressive array of records. A total of $4,083.00 will be distributed in cash prizes, of which $3,223.00 will go to the winners in the Men’s Division and $860.00 to the winners in vhe Women’s Division, Here’s the breakdown of the prize money: 20 prizes will be awarded in the Five-Man Event, the top prize being $300.00, the last one $20.00, adding up to a grand total of $1,131.00, plus $30.00 for High One Games. 47 prizes have been provided for the Two-Man Event, starting with $125.00 and ending with $8.00, totalling $963.00, plus $12.00 High One Game monies. And 78 prizes have been set for the Men’s Individual Event, starting with $80.00 and ending with $4.00, adding up to a total of $984 plus twice three dollars for High One Games. In the Women’s Division there are 7 prizes in the Five-Woman Event, the top prize being $100.00 and the lowest $15.00 with two $10.00 prizes for High One Games. The total is $340.00. In the Two-Woman Event 16 prizes, totalling $225.00 plus two $5.00 prizes for High One Games will be distributed. Top: prize is $50.00 and the lowest prize is $6.00. In the Women’s Individual Event we have 25 prizes totalling $231.00 plus two additional prizes of $2.00 each for High One Games. The highest prize is $35.00, the lowest $3.00*. All Events will give 9 prizes to the Men’s Division, the highest being $25.00, the lowest $2.00, while 7 prizes go to the Women’s Division, the highest $15.00 and the lowest $2.00. And that’s a total of 221 prizes. Plus the trophies. Another New. Record! COMFORTABLE SCHEDULE LEAVES TIME FOR FUN The great advantage of Lakeview Recreation is that it could put 50 first1 class alleys at the disposal of the Tournament Committee. It is due to this that bowling in the early morning and late night hours could be avoided. The Tournament will be run strictly on schedule and that means a good night’s rest for every bowler and plenty of time for the two evenings’ entertainment and fellowship. Here is the schedule: SATURDAY, MAY 5, 1951 Alleys No. 1 to No. 30 10:00 A.M. MEN (Minor Events) 12:00 NOON MEN (Minor Events) 2:00 P.M. MEN (Minor Events) 4:00 P.M. MEN (Ylinor Events) 6:00 P.M. SUNDAY, MAY 6, 1951 Alleys No. 1 to No. 30 Alleys No'. 31 to No. 50 10:00 A.M. WOMEN (Team Event) MEN (Team Event) 12:30 P.M. MEN (Team Event) MEN (Team Event) Apparently, by 8 P.M., on Saturday evening the Minor Events will be concluded, the lights will go out over the alleys and the thunder of the rolling 16 pounders will cease. What next? All the bowlers will have to do is just to move one floor to the huge ball-room of Lakeview Recreation. Here the lights will go on and the welcome strain of dance music will greet the entertainment-hungry crowd. The dancestarts at 8 P.M., and those developing a hunger or thirst from the day’s and evening’s various exercises, will not need to go a-hunting for a restaurant, Lakeview Recreation has it all, sandwiches, specially prepared for the participants of the tournament, and refreshments of all kinds and what is most important, at specially reasonable prices. The dance is for the bowlers, whose registration fee covers the evening’s entertainment, though not the fuel . . . Incidentally, the provisions for food and refreshments hold for the entire time of the tournament, from early to iate on both days . . . You never have to leave Ijakeview Recreation whatever you need or desire: it’s all there, awaiting your pleasure. It will be kind of late by the time the bowlers return to the hotel, so that should be enough for Saturday. On Sunday, bowling probably will be over a little after 3 o’clock. Time enough to get back to the hotel, dress for the great night and return to Lakeview Recreation at your convenience, let’s say 5 or 6 o’clock. Here again, the convenience and preferences of the bowlers have been given first consideration when the Committee arranged for a buffet-dinner to be served continuously from 5 P.M., t© 7 P.M. We understand, a splendid dinnerwill be served, so be sure to save plenty of room for it. (Your reservation fee covers your dinner as well as the dance afterwards.) We’ll still be at Lakeview Recreation for the dance after a sumptuous dinner. Chicago’s finest orchestras have been engaged to play on both evenings, so don’t leave your dancing slippers at home . . .Also, remember to train youtj hands before you go to Chicago, so that you can give a thunderous applause to the champions who will be announced and receive their trophies during the dance, as soon as ‘Pop’ Diliinger gets done with the scores ... A minimum of speeches and a maximum of entertainment is promised to all. CHICAGO COMMITTEES READY’ TO WELCOME VISITORS The Tournament Committees of Chicago have done a wonderful job.
