HORVATH — Cleveland, O. j WISHING HAPPY TOURNEY Well, here we are on the eve of another Verhovay Bowling Tournament and this columnist takes pleasure in expressing his best wishes for a successful bowling tournament. To each and every bowler we wish good luck; may you have your best series and, if not, at least a good time. And may God bless you all •— with Health, Wealth and Happiness. HUNGARIAN FREEDOM DAY Hungarian Freedom Day was celebrated on March 11th here in Cleveland beginning at 2 p.m., by placing' a wreath at the statue on University Place, followed by a wonderful program in St. John’s Auditorium at Ambler St., and Buckeye Road. There were recitations by Paul Fitzeri and Joseph Kadar, songs by St. Stephen’s choir, vocal selections by Joseph Rabb and Ilona Majoros, and stirring addresses by Frank Pokorny and the Assistant Pastor of the First Hungarian Reformed Church and others. We met many acquaintances at St. John’s, among them Joseph M. Toth, Frank Szabó, Coloman Kolozsvary, Balint Nagy, Joseph Szalay, Judge Louis Petrash and many others. SPORTS CLUB CARD PARTY The Verhovay Sports Club card party was a huge success. Why? Because it was well organized and excellently managed. Chairman Frank Oravis did a swell job, Carl Pertz outshone himself in the role of dispenser of refreshments and Joseph Semetko contributed to the wealth of THIS “n” THAT Cleveland, Ohio — Branch 45 By: EMERY SOBONY, JR., District Manager What is your child worth?.... More, yes far more than all the gold in the world. — No amount of money could replace the comfort and happiness brought into your life by his radiant personality. You naturally, want your child or grandchild to enjoy the advantages of youth, receive a proper education and be prepared for a career. The Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association offers a way to guarantee your plan, for your children, even in the event that you should not be living to see that your ambitions for them are fulfilled. The most wonderful gift a parent or grandparent could give to a child is a Verhovay Juvenile Plan, that guarantees a child’s future. And the cost to you, for each $1000 is about the same as a pack of daily cigarettes. Come in to the office, -drop me a postal or phone and I’ll be glad to go over the details with you. Judge George P. Baer, one of our older and distinguished members is now in Winter Park, Florida and from the contents of his letter, appears to be there permanently. All Verhovayans wish to extend a firm handclasp and hearty welcome to our new members: Mr. Anthony Hellies, Miss Joann Wedics, Mr. Peteris Reikstins, Mr. Lawrance Hollo, Mr. Emil Nagy, Mr. John Eisman and Mrs. John Leitold. Welcome and congratulations to you! ❖ Reporting our sick members always makes me feel bad, but then after they recover, makes me, as little Annie Rooney says in the comics; “Feel glad all over.” We all hope for a speedy recovery for Attorney Nick Brinsky, who had an operation at Cleveland Clinic, to our old members, Mr. Stephen Kravecs, Mr. Joseph Berey, Mrs. Elemer Mastics, Mrs. Julius Csanyi, Mr. Stephen Onodiy, Mr. Martin Uhrin and Mr. Michael Dery out there in California. Among our members in the Armed Services of our country are Mr. John Babarscik, Jr., who is with the Combat Engineers, stationed in Washington and Mr. Eugene G. Kolaeh, who is a radio operator 3rd plass, with the Navy, Mr. Stephen Semock also answered the call, but I did not find out where he is stationed. »I. Many of our members do not know that Branch 45 has a bowling team. A darn good one too! They bowl at the Krizák Alleys every Wednesday night and are now competing for the Verhovay Branch 45 Trophy. The winner in turn will bowl for the Verhovay Cleveland Trophy, competing with the various Cleveland branches for the citywide victory. Of course in the process of working outi the details, the branch managers all think that their teams are the best, but I’ll go along with the Branch 45 bowlers when they say, “Branch 45. team will win the city trophy and send the other Verhovay teams back to playing with Duck Pins.” Our Verhovay 45’ers team consist of: Joe. Kravecs, Emil Nagy, Jack Eisman, Larry Hollo, Elmer Peldyak, John Ste'pancik, Steve Kravecs, Steve Votecik and Steve Halovifs. Each one an ace bowler. Saturday night I had the pleasure; of attending a dinner tendered for Emery Hoffer at the Hungarian Self Culture Club rooms, in honor of his birthday and for the splendid, unselfish work he has done in the past for the club. I was quite pleased to see so many Verhovay members present who were enjoying themselves very much. * The office quarters here have been, or seemed quite dull, what with Dr. Andiew Kovács away all week to attend our association’s Board of Directors meeting in Pittsburgh, and Nick Brinsky in the hospital. Even Leslie Dus from Branch 14 stayed away. Word must have gotten around that I have the plague or some such thing, because I keep hearing about this member and that old timer who had been so active in our branch and introduced so many new members, but so far I have not had much of the privilege nor pleasure of their company nor efforts of their activity. But who knows, the quarrentine may be lifted any day now. It’s about time that I finished up with this column, so as g last thought — let me hear from you. — Emery Sobony, Jr. Journal April 18, 1951 the Sports Club by selling tickets. Doughnuts and coffee were made by Mrs. Joseph Szalay, Mrs. Csikós, Mrs. Helen Oravis and our treasure and treasurer, Mrs. Ann Pinter. Donations for door prizes were received from Joseph Szalay, Mr. and Mrs. Sigmund Kadar, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bodnar, managers of our Home, who gave two prizes, a beautiful cake by Mrs. Ann Pinter and another prize, a basket from Molnar’s food market, a cake from Horvath’s bakery, two prizes from Pine Tavern, four prizes from Mr. and Mrs. Geza “Sandy” Hegedűs, some more prizes from Csizmadia Rustic Bar, Joe Bell’s Grocery, Hollander’s Furniture Store and two gifts from friends.... Thanks ever so much for your goodwill to the Verhovay Sports Club. Geo Bubonic and his accordion made things very lovely. He's the same fellow who played at the bowling alley. We had movies of last year’s picnic but Ed Torda and his wife, Katherine, left before they could see themselves on the screen, while his brother Loui and his wife, Louise, and his brother-in-law, Andy Bakos, stayed long enough to see the film. Oscar Federau brought his radio and sereval of his friends, among them Carl Ferency, Frank Janosy and Dodo. Mr. Coloman Kolozsvary left early because he had to catch a train to Pittsburgh for the spring meeting of the Board of Directors. Mrs. Betty Kadar did yeoman’s work for the Club, selling tickets, waiting at tables! land running the games. Frank Pinter and Joseph Szalay were in a contest to show who. the quickest sandwich eater was, but the sandwiches were of rubber, — no contest! Tony Pinter was chief cook and bottle washer, Steve “Susie” Piscalko was the gcodwill ambassador. Among those present we saw Steve: “Red Hot” Vache, John Paul, Paul Molnár, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szabó, the newlyweds, Mrs. Carl Pertz, Mr. pnd Mrs. Sandy, Sigmund Kadar, John Krupanszky, Mrs. Krabatz, Mrs. Kadar, Mrs. Ehasz and many others. We wish to take this opportunity to thank each and every one who attended our card party. And we hope you will all come to our speck fry.. ! PERSONAL NOTES We heard that John Górta of Br. 14 fell from a truck and suffered head injuries that may require an operation. He was unconscious for two days. He’s at Doctor’s Hospital, but the latest news was that he is, thank God, out of danger. Paul Bolesic has a new hobby. He is a collector of tickets.... of the traffic variety.... It’s about time for John J. Balazs’ annual visit to the Verhovay Home.... We saw Bill Zsednay’s picture in the Verhovay Journal and he doeslook good. We didn’t even know he was in the army, but we feel sure Bill will be successful in everything he undertakes. Good luck, Bill! Welcome Emery Sobony, Jr., to the Trenton Member Of Branch 417 Runs for City Council VICTOR J. LUKACS A popular member of Branch 417 in Trenton, J., Victor J. Lukacs is assistant personnel manager of the John Roebling Company which employs a great many Hungarians in Trenton. As President of the Hungarian Democratic Club he is candidate for election as a city councilman. He is married, highly active in the affairs of Branch 417, whose members undoubtedly will .express their appreciation of his sincere iraternalism by supporting him in his quest for public service. Verhovay Journal. After reading your column “This V That,” we look forward to your future contributions from which we may learn a lot about the West Side from your able pen.... We like the Social Security Information column.... And we were approached about running for Council in Ward 29, Cleveland, O., and the proposition has our earnest consideration. We regret having to report another accident: Louis Toth of E. 118th St., ; former President of St. John’s Snorts Club, fell on a slippery sidewalk and broke his ankle. He will be in a cast for about ten weeks. Frank Orosz and Stephen Szabó are back in the Television business again, at 2668 Grand Ave., Cleveland 4, 0. How about opening a branch office on upper Buckeye so that Verhovay members could pay their dues without so much travel ? In closing, again the best of luck to each and every bowler!
