The gals belong to a women’s league and are proud of the fact that of all the Verhovay members in Greater Detroit, we have the only female team in sports of any nature. Their averages are small, but the will to excell rates 100%. I can only say that each week is an improvement over the one BRANCH 430 Homestead Sports Roundup Well, boys and girls, the Directors of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association voted a vast sports program at their recent semiannual meeting, a national Verhovay bowling program. The play-off is to be held in March, 1942, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, location of the Home Office and right in our own backyard. Take notice, Pittsburgh, McKeesport, Duquesne, Homestead and also the tri-state area, let’s start the ball rolling. Let’s put our teams in the National Verhovay Bowling Congress in March of next year. And what I mean by bowling teams is teams that will give all they have in sportsmanship, fair play, and their ability to go up to that black line, let it fly and hope for a good score. So— let’s go as a whole tri-state area to the National Verhovay Bowling Congress. Now that softball is tucked away in the cupboard until next year, we look toward our bowling team for which passed, and the combined total pins are slowly climbing. The games played on October 23 were the best to date, when one gamewas taken from the top teamin the League. Averages on 15 High Single Games inc. Oct. 23 Game to Date 103Mary Kuritar 138 95Cecelia Herman 115 83Helen Zaker 118 71Ethel Koy 104 70Jolán Lucas, Capt. 89 Looking over the scores of Branch 395 of McKeesport, Pa., we aren’t too bad for a bunch of gals, who have no co-operation as to rooting either from the branch or our personal male friends. One thing I’d like to get off my chest—all the girls are darn good sports—very congenial to each other and members of opposing teams. We are out to give Verhovay a name, but we are going to set an example in good sportsmanship and fraternalism above all else. After all, this is only the fifth week we’ve bowled and we may even become good enough to go to Pittsburgh for the tournament in March. The team “kitty” to date has the enormous sum of $2.16. At the rate we’re going we may not have enough to take the “boys” out at the end of the season, but may make it a “hen party” to remember. More bowling news next issue. Fraternally, THE FERRET, Publicity Agent. the present. It’s going to play in the Greater Pittsburgh Bowling League, as told to you by our “Homestead Merry-Go-Round” writer in the last issue of his column. We are hoping with our fingers crossed and the sign of victory which is used by Winston Churchill. So Branch 430, wake up! Let’s go bowling, team! Play hard for Branch 430, for yourselves, and for the greater glory of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association; show that you are willing to cooperate with the Directors and have faith that it will be a huge success next year and in the years to come. Come on, all you Verhovay branches throughout the East and Midwest, give the Directors a great big hand because they will not forget you or me. 1 know they are willing to help all the branches. I should like to know whether you like my sports roundups. If they are good, the time is well spent. If you like them, you may communicate with me by post card or letter, addressing Francis Mullen, 121 20th Avenue, Munhall, Pennsylvania, and I will communicate with you through this column. Right here and now I wish to thank Albert Jozik, known to all of us as one of the best well-liked members that we ever had in any of our branches, and he is the one who started me on the road to writing these sports roundups. Branch 395, take notice: I may kidnap Albert from your branch and take him to Branch 430 (in a joking manner of course, with no hard feelings). Last but not least, 1 send my congratulations, along with those of Branch 430, and that benedict Bill Kohut, to our new Supreme Treasurer, John Szalanczy, former Director of. Chicago, Illinois. Fraternally, FRANCIS MULLEN, Sports Scribe. * (Editorial Note: Francis Mullen, a young man of Irish extraction, is a trueblue Verhovay, one who is sincerely interested in Verhovay’s development and progress.)
