Page • MARTINS FERRY OPENS ITS BASKETBALL SEASON WITH TWO VICTORIES The Martins Ferry Basketball Team of Branch 40 opened its season by handing its first two opponents defeats. The first game, played on January 2, 1941, between Martins Ferry and Ferndale Dairy of Mt. Pleasant, ended in a score of 46-39, in favor of Martins Ferry. The second game, played on January 3, 1941, between Martins Ferry and a brother Verhovay team, the Alliance Verhovays, brought a score of 52-30, again in favor of Martins Ferry. The trip from Martins Ferry, Ohio to Alliance, Ohio covered a distance of approximately 80 miles. Arriving in Alliance, the Martins Ferry boys were greeted at the Verhovay Home by Michael Simo, District Organizer, and Joe Barany. Fresh from a good start, the Martins Ferrians were eager to get the game out of the way, which they did, but not until the plucky Álliance boys showed them that they too had the Verhovay spirit and were out for the same thing—victory. The boys of Alliance led at the end of the first quarter, then the Martins Ferry boys started to click and buckets were made from all angles, and after all the soap suds were washed out of their ears, the Martins Ferrians were victors by a score of 52-30. Here is a word of warning to other Verhovay basketball teams: Don’t let this score make you believe that Alliance is fish. They have a fine team, and perhaps if the floor had been bigger the score would have been either smaller or read the opposite. Those Alliance boys are all right. After the game the Martins Ferrians fulfilled the proverb “To the victor belongs the spoils,” by enjoying the splendid hospitality of the “foe”. The Alliance team exhibited the true Verhovay spirit of fraternalism, generously supplying the victors with a variety of sandwiches and very good coffee. Congratulations to the girls, who surely know how to make good coffee. Martins Ferry is deeply grateful to Alliance for its fine hospitality, and hopes to return the favor in February. Martins Ferry is also grateful for enjoying this repast in the Verhovay Home, which is indeed an attractive home. It was nice to exchange greetings and make new acquaintances during the eating. The game is over but it was Verhovay that won rather than Martins Ferry. P. S. The Verhovay Juniors of Martins Ferry are to date undefeated. They lead the league in Martins Ferry. Their ages are mostly between 12 and 16. Below are the results of the two games: Verhovays vs. Ferndale Dairy of Mt. Pleasant Verhovay ______.. Bowling is a game in which a woman can beat friend hubby, a weak man can trim the strong man, a game which today is known as the fastest growing sport in the world. There are approximately 120,000 teams registered with the American Bowling Congress of America. Besides this tihere are thousands of man and woman bowlers who do not bowl in organized leagues. (The Bowling Congress estimates about 12,000,000 bowlers in America.) Factories are organizing leagues in which the executives of the company rub elbows with the laboring man. This is the game which is known as “the most democratic sport in the world.” I have noticed that the various Verhovay branches throughout the country have organized bowling teams. Next year let us go further. Let’s organize bowling leagues, and, perhaps some day in the near future, the Verhovay Home Office will take it upon itself to organize and hold a yearly National Verhovay Bowling Tournament.---------------o-------------TEAM ORGANIZED; WANTS GAMES With the organization of a new team, the Verhovay Athletic Club of Elyria, Ohio, has begun its sports activities, which will be basketball, for this season. STRIKE Branch 394 of New York Wins Three Game Series From Branch 52 of New Brunswick On Sunday afternoon, January 5th, the bowling team of Branch 52 visited the New York team of Branch 394 to play a 3 game series. It seems that after losing 2 close games in New Brunswick on December 8th last, the boys of New York decided to get down to real business, and succeeded in sweeping the series from the New Brunswick boys. However, I must say that the boys of New Brunswick really put up a great battle and never once let up on their desire to win.
