AGE 8 November 25, 1537 WHO’S WHO IN DEARBORN BRANCH 429 It is with great regret that [ write this piece of news. Our “chief shut-in,” Edward S. “Bugs” Horvath died on October 11, 1937 at the age jf 22 years. This news was >o unexpected and was such i shock to all of us, that I ;ould not bring myself to vrite about it in the last issue. I have somewhat re:overed from the announcement, and am able to bring :o all of you his last impressions at the “San.” Edward vas born October 28, 1915 n Scranton, Pa. He was ilways an engaging young :hap, full of the old devil umself. * His best indoor sport was playing practical okes on his family and riends. His greatest ambition at the time of his graduation from high school vas to be a great surgeon, üis best friends are said to save been warned of “that slood-thirsty, Dr. Plorvath.” Vfter graduation, he was a ;as station manager, and a ather funny incident haptened, which impresses me s typical of “Bugs.” One day he was snipping , handful of very thin wire vith a pair of tin-snips. Vhen asked what his intenions were with regard to the /ire, he casually mentioned hat he was going to Barber College and he was just dóig some home work. Even t the “San,” that fun-loving ature of his could not be tilled. On one occation, I emember “Bugs” giving a atient at the “San” a sugaroatecl almond with the unerstanding that it was neessary to take before a cerlin operation. All these distances of mishief-making should not give he impression that Ed was ist an over-grown kid. He ad his serious moments, nd his optimism in the face f his illness was the most wonderful thing about him. le was planning on taking course as a chemical enginer at the time of his death, fe was a reporter, and later ssociate editor on the “San” aper, and would have been romoted to Editor in the iring. Edward was improving eautifully when he develop:! pneumonia, and with an ifected lung he didn’t have meli of a fighting chance, s it is, Our young man night for 17 days, 11 of hich was spent under an xygen tent, before his eakened condition failed is great courage. May our friend rest in sace, and may his dauntless spirit carry him forward, wherever he may be. Branch 429 will miss him, for his cheerfulness, and his courage, for a long time to come. * * * Mary Rakoczy, our everfaithful member, attended a very formal dance at the Hotel Statler. As for her friend Cecelia Herman, she participated in the Hair Dressers Convention at the Book Cadillac Hotel. I guess the Verhovay Home isn’t good enough for these good-looking damsels; they must be seen among the 400. Oh, well, I gijess they deserve the best of everything for being the best members of our branch. * * * Stephen Schnable, w h o was recently transferred from the Wyandotte Branch, has moved to Chicago to work. However, he does not wish to be transferred to the Chicago branch, which speaks well for Branch 429. Too bad, girls, that you couldn’t meet him before he moved away, as he was a very good-looking blond. He has promised to come to our dances or parties so let’s have one soon. * * * Jolán and Louis Lucas paid Mary and Mike Batyik a visit at their farm recently for shooting practice. Mary is quite a good shot, although Jolán is not far behind. The men didn’t do so well because they had too much to drink the night before — they say. * * * Our dignified president, William G. Cseh (“make that William G. Cseh sound big,” he says when the minutes are being read) is heading for the last round-up (getting hitched) with Stella Metelski on November 20. Congratulations, Bill and Stella. * * , * Our charming “Long-Distance” girl, Mary E. Horvath, had a coming out party on October 22, (her appendix came out). The young lady was consoled by many beautiful flowers from all her grieving (?) friends several letters and a lovely gift from Ann V. Biro of Scardale, N.Y. * * * Jeannette Horvath and Jolán Lucas are extending a special invitation to Elvira László to join the dramatic group of the Girls Club Hov\f about it Elvira (Mae West)? We need one of your type. Special notice to Zoltán and Oscar and the other boys from Branch 36.... The girls from Branch 429 want their weinie roast, or do you want to change it to a skating party? You’ll have to buy our lunch anyhow, so don’t think you are getting away with anything. * * * If E. G. is married, as the boys in Branch 36 have been telling us, how can he be engaged to M. R. of Dearborn? Is he a bigamist or something? * * * Congratulations to Joseph J. Horvath for thinking up the name “dead-head.” I’ve been trying to think up a name for them for a long time. * * * Welcome to our midst, Phantom, Jay Gee, (he’s an old tinier, but he has been away for a while) and I.M. Nosey. But please try tó get your columns in the English issue so we can all read your comments — not just a fortunate minority, (Publicity material must be in by the 15th.) To date we have the Ferret, Tattler, Snooper, and Joseph J. Plorvath, that potential Winchell, who dares to sign his name to his column. Speaking of “dead heads” Joe, I wonder how long it would take you to determine the sex of a FERRET. Ordinarily, a ferret refers to a polecat or weasel, but on the other hand, a ferret has been known to be a female gossip. So you see your powers of deduction were not wonderful after all. Nevertheless, dear Joe, your ribbing me has made others sit up and take notice of our columns and write one of their own. * * * A few members of Branch 429 have been thinking of going down to visit the members of the Cleveland Branch 366. We will go if you treat us right — you know, give us something to eat and stuff. * * * We find William C. Kohut’s (Homestead, Pa.) column, “A Verhovay Itinerary” so enlightening or something. Too bad it can’t be in the English issue so more of the members could read it. * * * NOTICE TO MEMBERS: The “annual elections” meeting will be held Sunday. December 12, at 2:30 P.M. at the Sugar Bowl, corner of Salina and Lowery. We will WerhovayJournal= have beer and other refreshments after the meeting, with dancing for those who like it. The officers of the club would like to have every member present as this is the most important meeting of the year. JOLÁN LUCAS, Sec. * * * Well, Branch 356, I’m not the only one after your branch. Did you notice J. J. Horvath’s (Br. 366) remarks about you fellows? Don’t let him get away with that; show him your branch is as great a branch as theirs, ft would be kind of tough to take what he said about you sitting down on the job. I happen to know there is good stuff in your branch, so how about organizing and doing something. We’ll help you from our tiny branch, (if you need it) and we’ll show those Cleveland members that you can be just as active as they are.
