Programja kitűnő volt és az erkölcsi siker épen olyan pompás volt, mint az anyagi siker. TAGSZERZÉSI KAMPÁNY CLEVELANDBAN NAGY TAGSZERZÉSI KAMPÁNYT kezd Cleve­landiban és Ohio államban a Verhovay Segély Egylet Labor Day után, vagyis szeptember 7'ikén, amely kampány 10 napig fog tar­tani. Részt vesz abban min­den Verhovay tag, aki szi­vén viseli saját Egyesületé­nek a sorsát és jövőjét. A Verhovay Segély Egylet nagy magyar kötelességet is teljesít most, amikor nagy erővel ujitja meg szervező és tagszerző kampányát. — Egyesületünk ugyanis ma már ofyan biztos, mint bár­melyik amerikai bizositó in­tézet. Ezt senki sem vitat­hatja el. Az Insurance De­partment megállapította, — hogy Egyesületünk 128 os, vagyis nemcsak a törvény által előirt fedezete van meg, még pedigVhlndén'biztosított tag után, hanem azonfelül még 28 százalékkal több. Ez azt jelenti, hogy minden tag kötvénye egy negyeden fe­lit! többet ér, mintahogy a törvény előírja. Természete­sen ez a feltétlen biztonság nemcsak a régi, hanem az uj tagokra is érvényes. Ha ma belép valaki a Verhovay Se­gély Egyletbe, nem száz szá­zalékosan van biztosítva, ha­nem azon felül, úgyhogy a legkisebb kétség sem fér ahhoz, hogy ma, holnap és mindenkor biztos alapon mű­ködik a Verhovay Segély Egylet. A kampány ideje alatt több kerületi szervező is meg fog fordulni Cleveland­iján s e helyen külön, is fel­hívjuk Tagtársaink^ figyel­mét arra, hogy a kampány ideje alatt is mindert tagtár sunk megkapja a neki járó tagszerzési dijat, ha a szer­vezők bármelyikével kimegy ismerősei és barátai körébe tagokat szerezni. ÁRPÁD the Chieftain The seven tribes of Magyars, which — according to Turkish usage —• were called the seven Magyars, living in their ancient home on the shores of the Meotis River could not permit themselves to enter into battle with the over­whelming power of the attacking Patzinoks (Petchenegu­­es). To avoid certain destruction they were forced to leave their home on the shores of the Meotis to finally move Westward. The Westward migrating Magyars fled to the lowlands between the Dneiper and the lower Danube, which because of the many rivulets flowing between, they in their own language named “Etelköz”. They did not plan, how­ever, to settle at Etelköz where their position from a milit­ary standpoint was one of utter hopelessness. Their neigh­bors on the East, members of the Patzinak alliance, which with great strength forced them from their old home, were the tribes of the Kangar Chief Aga known for their daring and cruelty. On the North was the young Norman-Russian power of the Dneiper district Slavs recently organized with Germanic thoroughness. On the South were the Bulgari­ans already living for several decades their first flowering age as a Christian state under the iron-handed rule of the Emperor Simon, who daringly stood in defiance of the power of the Byzantine empire. Confronted by these three dangerous neighbors — quick action, the organization of defense and preliminary preparations for further moving was necessary. The lead­ers oj the Magyars recognizing the situation endeavoured to master these problems. So they created the military and political unity_necessary for defense and prepared the way for further migration. The chiefs of the seven Mágyáf íribes, Nyék, Megyer, Kürtgyarmat, Tarján, Jenő, Kér and Keszi together with the thr^e tribes of Kabars, who joined them under the; leadership of one chief as the eighth united Magyar tribe, elected as hereditary prince, Arpad, the son of Chief Alinas,, ■who, according to family traditions, was descended on his maternal side from Attila and from the Bulgarian Gyula race. . •• e- . According to tradition the investiture, of the here­ditary prince, the symbolic blood-relation binding, followed amidst universally known ceremonies. The chiefs dripped their blood into one vessel and after drinking the mixture of blood, according to their beliefs, they became each other’s blood kin. (According to. other legends the binding of the blood pact symbolized that the blood of the one who breaks this pact should drip like then). The making of the kinship alliance served in. avert­ing clashes between the tribes and internal conflicts since between blood relations revenge by bloodshed and in gener­al warfare were forbidden. With this-by making the figur­ative relationship they welded into one family, — their lord according to blood — the chiefs acknowledged Arpad and his descendants the natural head of the eight tribes. After this ceremony followed that of holding aloft the shields, during which the tribes placing Arpad on their shields ceremoniously declared him their chieftain or prince. With the investiture of the supreme chief following the course of the figurative blood relation ceremonies (blood pact) the weak tribal unions, as a political national formation were brought to a conclusion. According to the pact the rank of ruling prince was inherited by Arpad’s family. The order of hereditary succession — according to the general custom of the Turks — was by seniority in the sense of which after the death of the prince or tribal chieftain as his heir the eldest member of his family takes his place. With the declaration of Arpad as prince the internal political expension, commenced half a century before, the independent organizing of the Magyar tribal unions — freed from the pressure of the Chazars — reached a natural and necessary completion. The person of the new prince signified an entire change of course in foreign policy. Prince Arpad immediately after his election formed in 892 an alliance with King Arnult, head of the Germanic territories of the Eastern Franks, against the Moravian prince, Svatopluk, and that year, and even two years later fought in the vicinity of the Danube. The reason for these warfares was not the plundering instict of the Magyars but the desire to leave the neighborhood of the Patzinaks, their purpose was not the acquisition of spoils but the spying out of the neighboring territories of Etelköz, and especially the one time Avar empire. The Magyar returned from these battles with valuble experiences . (To be continued)
