12-IK OLDAL JANUÁR 29, 1937 Verhopayakjhpja Duquesne, Pa. Verhovays Issue Challenge to All Verhovay Branches for Games The basketball team representing the Verhovay Fraternal Association, Junior Branch 441, of Duquesne, Pa. would like to meet all Verhovay Branches that have teams. The Dukes have a formidable array of high class >■ performers in their lineup, most of them former High School luminaries on recent championship teams. The team has only lost one game and numbers among its victims some of the strongest teams in this end of the state. Everywhere the Verhovay have appeared they have made the fans rave over their superlative passing attack, and whirlwind speed in all-round play. Practically all the baskets scored by the Dukane crew have been registered right under the hoop after some clever passing. Most of the boys on the squad are over the six foot mark, and possess plenty of experience. The players were banded together sometime in October, signed as fullfledged members, and then outfitted with classy equipment. The team plays nothing but the best of first class opponents, and employ a clean brand of ball at all times. There isn’t a neater appearing aggregation in the district. The Duquesne Branch organized about a year ago, and at the present time have enrolled 75 members, and showing further progress, from day to day. Enthusiasm in the Association is exceptionally good, with a splendid spirit in existence among all the members. The basketball team is establishing an enviable reputation in cage circles in Pennsylvania with brilliant achievements established on the hardwood already. — There are 12 members on the squad, all of equal ability, and the team is tutored by Eddie Klein, a former eager • with the Duquesne Saltzers, Lafayettes, Fintex, and Sommermans, of Pittsburgh. — Any Verhovay Branch teams wishing to book the Duquesne entry is requested to communicate with Eddie Klein, c-o Duquesne Times, Duquesne, Pa. The Dukaners have outlined a busy card that will find the team traveling to every city in Western Pennsylvania, some section of Ohio, and part of West Virginia. Games are pending with the country’s leading attractions. Before the court campaign draws to its. close, the Duquesne V erhovays hope to advance to a position where they will be classed as a real byword in basketball circles, everywhere the sport is played. Judgind from their illustrious display to-date, the boys should have no difficulty at all in accomplishing that end. The motto of the Duquesne Branch, members and pleyers, is ‘'Forward With The Verhovays”. Attention all Verhovay Branches: Schedule the Duquesners and let the fans judge for themselves. WHO’S WHO IN DEARBORN? NOTICE: — Members of Branch 429 please notice the large advertisement which appears in this, issue of the Journal to the effect that we will celebrate the second anniversary of our branch with a combined Valentine and Anniversary Dance on Saturday, February 13 at the Verhovay Home. Tickets, which will be 25 cents, will be available at 10037 Burey Avenue and 2441 Holly St., Dearborn. A- one-act farce will be given by several brilliant members of our branch for the entertainment of our guests. This little play in itself will be something to look forward to (remember the Mock Wedding?). In addition, other entertainment will be planned and an excellent dance orchestra has been engagaed for the pleasure of everyone. Regarding refreshments: The Ferret has been snooping and found out that delicious Do-Nuts will be present in their sugarcoated jackets. A large cake which will be trimmed up like a Christmas tree, will be raffled off to the lucky winner. Come on, you cake-eaters, and buy raffle tickets from the pretty ladies. The Entertainment Committee has decided to make the selling of tickets interesting for the mutual benefit of the branch. A dash prize and a pair of tickets to the dance will be given to the person selling the largest num ber of tickets. Transportation for the benefit of those Dearborn residents who have no car will be available at 2441 Holly Street, so don’t hesitate to go because of lack of tranportation. There will be a cash door przie to the lucky winner. Everybody come and have an unusual and pleasant evening. Branch 429 always shows you a good time. Edward “Bugs” Horvath has received word from the Hon. Medics that he has exterminated the T. B. Bugs from his system. This young chap has a sign above his bed at the “San” to the effect that he has “T. B. Bugs For Sale at 5 cents each.” He must have done a rushing business in the last couple of months to be out of them. He is now looking for a “good color, solid body greater pep and power, an maximum performance.” (Sounds more like a motor car.) If any one has any of these items in^surplus, “Bugs” will cheerfully trade T. B. Bugs for same. And now for Joseph László Jr.’s suggestion which was to be announced in this issue of the Journal. Prepare yourselves Joe thought it would be a good idea if each member of Branch 429 banked 10% of their weekly salary in a designated bank for a period of about two years, at the end of which time the members in a body would travel to Europe and our Fatherland on a complete tour! Now what do you think of it? “Branch 429 of the Verhovay Fraternal Association touring Hungary in true fraternal spirit.” Suonds good, doesn’t it, and it would be something to work for. Comments for and against the idea will be cheerfully received. * * New Year’s Eve was celebrated at the Verhovay Home in the proper fraternal spirit by several members of Branch 429. Among the gay crowd were William G. Cesh, our dignified president, Louis and Jolán Lucas, Jeanette Horvath, Elvira László, Cecelia Herman, Mary Rakoczy and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Horvath. The Social Club of Br. 36 furnished male escorts for our female members, and both branches had tables next to each other. What young lassie from Branch 429 stole the hearts of the lads of Branch 36, only to disappoint them at the Annual New Year’s Frolic given by this fraternity, by not appearing? Things I never knew till now! That Branch 429 is represented mostly by young ladies and this Branch by boys. A member of this Club, after the New Year was ushered in, was the victim of the Mistletoe curse, when he was called upon by the young lassies to pass the kisses.
