6-ik oldal JANUÁR 29, 1937 interviewed recently con cerning her proposed trip to Hungary, she said: “1 am looking forward to this trip very eagerly. I am most anxious to pay tribute ito the statue that has been erected *in my husband’s; memory. I also wish to thank the Hungarian people for this great honor. As for accompanying the (Verhovay youngsters — I tan think of no greater pleasure. This is truly a wonderful levent in my life”. From all indications, the 'competition will be even more keen than last year. ■ The winners of last year’s tontest are to be reckoned doubly hard to win a prize. They know what is “in store for them.” So thrilled were they by the trip that when they returned last fall, they immediately made inquiry about the next campaign. Í One of the girls exclaimed : 1 “It was just like a fairy tale! Why, we were treated so magnificently, we felt like visiting royalty. I'll never forget the beautiful things we saw and I am going to work doubly hard this year to get as many members as I can in order to repay the Verhovay for making this trip possible and, of course, so that I can go again this year.” The name of General Harry Hill Bandholtz will live forever in' the hearts of all Hungarians. One incident that most clearly portrays his strong character, is the one that took place when the Roumanians marched on Budapest after the World War. They were all preparde to lay waste the City and carry away the food stuffs and clothing stored there. A portion of the Army moved on toward the National Museum of Hungary in Budapest with the purpose of stealing its priceless treasures but General Bandholtz had no intention of permitting such an out rage, and cut short their plans most quickly and ef fectively. He battled his way through the troops and took his position at the entrance of the building. He said in a loud authoritative voice: “I an> placing a seal on the door of this building The man who dares break this seal will have to reckon with me.” General Bandholtz is the man to whom Hungarians are grateful to this day that the National Museum still stands for the Roumanians were bent on destroying it but were reluctant to risk his ire and so withdrew. This beautiful building is listed among the other points of interest in the sightseeing tour which the contest winners will make. Those earning the privilege of making the trip, will be shown the first suspension bridge ever built. It is j called the “Lancz Hid”i (Chain Bridge) and con-| nects the two cities which were formerly known as Buda and Pest. The Unusual feature of this bridge is that it is not made of cables but of heavy chain links. Also located in Budapest is the most beautiful Go v.ernment building in the world-the Parliament build ing which overlooks the sweeping banks of the Danube. The incomparable gypsy music which pours forth from the places of merriment will long be remembered by every boy and girl for there is no music like that of the Hungarian gypsy. Budapest also boasts of the first subway system ever built in the world. The Rose Garden of Budapest holds a prominent place, in the leading gardens of the world. One of the most popular type of rose is grown there—the “Gulbaba Rose.” All the marvelous wonders that are to be seen in Hungary are too numerous to mention but there is one thing certain, any boy or girl who succeeds in winning a trip to this “story book” land will have an experience but few are privileged to have. The voyage will be made july 24—not very far off. Now is the time to start in interviewing your friends. Everyone of your friends is a prospective member. The sooner you begin soliciting members, the better your chance will be. The advantages offered by the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association are so numerous that by explaining these /to your friends and relatives, you can easily convince them that thg Verhovay is the 'organization with which they should tie up. The Verhovay Aid Association has overcome many «obstacles that were in its path for a good many years. Now the organization has grown to such heights that every man, woman, and child owes it to himself to affiliate himself with such a worthwhile and upcoming organization. Let the ball start rollingj It is the aim of the Verhovay to count among its ranks every upstanding Hungarian. You can help it to attain this goal. Start in today! , Here are the names of our members who have already entered the contest and challenge you to compete with them for these wonderful prizes: Acs Anna — Buffalo, N. Y. Baki Bose — Detroit, Mich. Balázs John J., Cleveland, O.-^JfrhovQycikjQpjQ —— Second Generation American-Hungarians Have Their Day By: Josephine Nagy, Allentown (Student of Cedar Crest College) In the majority of the cities where the world famous Budapest University Chorus gave concerts, the secondgeneration Hungarian youth have awakened to the call of their heritage. They formed committees, wrote letters, told their American friends about it, and were boosting in everv way the concerts of the Budapest University Chorus. Every Hungarian young man and woman would spend all of his spare time to arrange for a visit to his city by one friend coming from Hungary. He would exert himself strenously if he knew that a group of fifty would come to his city. But now that we the second generation youth has discovered that not just one person or fifty people have come across, but one of the finest Choirs in Europe visited his town — and that Choir consists of all Hungarians! — we were happier than ever! How many times have you, young citizens of America wondered about your parents’ native land? How much has the Country of your, ancestry contributed to the arts and sciences of the world? Where does Hungary stand in culture, civilization, progress? We now' have an answ er. We have shown the world. We can now be proud! A genuine Magyar contribution to the Music and Cultural world, in the form of 42 University students and instructors, travelling thoughbut the country, in PERSON, to answer your questions, and to strengthen your belief'in yourself! These young men, ranging in age from twenty to fifty, will want to meet YOU. They want to meet your relatives. They want to talk to you. They represent the various sections of Hungary, and you will have a chance to see someone who was born in the same country in which your mother or father was born. Let us show' then that we can entertain royally! Let us.show them that we are happv to see them! Let us show them that we want them to come again! We shall turn out one and all to give them the best time they have ever had. They are giving us a concert. Let us give them our love. Bartos Mary, Dayton, 0. Barcsai Gábor, Kingston, Pa. Bodnár L. CONTESTANTS ATTENTION ! Only those new members cam be credited to your account for whom the contest entry blanks are forwarded to this office. Despite our numerous reminders, there have been a number of applications received at this office from constentants—without the necessary entry blanks. We again request that contestants, upon securing a new member, forward the entry blank together with the application, if possible. It is only from thes«e blanks that the new members can be entered in your favor. We wish to bring to each contestant's attention, that if yon secure, or secure with another’s help, a new member, the entry blank be forwarded, because the home office keeps their record according to these blanks. The final results cannot be attained without these. Another request to our contestants is, that they see that the new members remain in the Association. It does no good to secure ten members who pay one or two month’s dues, and them discontinue paying further—the contestant’s work then counts foir naught. There remain only four months in the contest so this time must be used to the best advantage The past days and weeks are now behind us, and only the future remains from which to attain success.
