48 VÁC IN THE ÁRPÁD ERA (895-1 301) Vác in the Árpád err -------N THE AGEOFTHECONQUEST After the Conquest the Hungarians arriving from the East with the Kabars, who had joined them but were of Turkish origin and already bilingual by this time, might have settled down as separate tribes in the Carpathian Basin. The tribes consisted of large dans including several free families and their servants. For lack of written sources we can only assume based on the examples of other peoples living in a similar lifestyle that each clan occupied the valley or the surroundings of a river. Our ancestors, who made a living by agriculture and pasturing animals, took possession of their new homeland around 900 AD, and settled down mainly in the central part of the country, in the plains and the hills. We have traces of them from several parts of Vác. Excavations at the contemporary settlements have resulted mostly in finding the remains of simple dwellings and the fragments of cheap, roughly worked clay pots. Cemeteries usually provide a wider range of finds. In the first place we should mention the graves from the 10-11th centuries found in 1884 close to Hétkápolna (Seven Chapels). Next to the bodies, which had been buried in pagan rituals, there were jewels like S- shaped rings used for braided hair, earrings, crescentshaped pendants, beads, twisted bronze torques, The arrival of the Hungarians (Illustrated Chronicle) I shank buttons, golden and bronze rings. One of the graves at the cemetery from this period found in the present Hattyú Street also contained a clay pot filled with food for the other world. Although some of the warriors living in this territory must have participated in the plundering raids, so-called “rovings”, which had been regularly launched westwards and southwards up to the middle of the 10th century, no burial place with western loot or coins has been found yet. The Germanic soldiers, who became more and more successful in defying the attacks during the decades, used double-edged straight swords, which were much heavier than those of the Hungarians. The Normans made the same sort of weapons (PMMI-TIM 52.5.3) at that time At enc| 0f the 19th century a double-edged, richly decorated sword was found in the nearby Csörög.
