VÁC IN THE ÁRPÁD ERA (895-1 301 ) 49 and crossbar are covered with a braidpatterned silver plate. This rare find may have been made in Denmark or Gotland at the end of the 10th century, and it must have come a long and adventurous, if unknown way until it was buried beneath the ground, probably as an accessory of a grave. No doubt its last owner was a noble and distinguished warrior. We might well assume that he did not obtain the valuable weapon in a campaign but bought it; but like his conquering forefathers, he still prepared for the afterlife in the pagan rite. The people of the seven chieftains, in conquering their new homeland, had not come to an uninhabited area, The Slavs, originating from somewhere around the present Polish-Byelorussian borderline, had been merging through generations with the descendants of the Avars who had lived here since the middle of the 6th century having also originated in the Eastern steppes. The fact that the Asian equestrian nomads preferred the | lower areas, which were easier to cultivate | and more suitable for raising heavy-built | animals, while the descendants of the north- ] ern newcomers maintained their - probably | laborious - sustenance in the valleys of the j hills and the mountains, might have resulted | in a less strainful coexistence. In the | course of long decades the two peo- | pies may have thoroughly merged. This is suggested by the fact that | the archaeological finds of the Avars and | the Slavs living in the territory of Hungary I during the centuries around the Conquest j are very often indistinguishable. For j example, the pots (dishes for storing I and cooking) found in the settlements ] of the 9-10th centuries can only be | identified as to their ages, but they do not provide | information about the language, the culture or the | identity of the people and the families who used j them.
