NEWS FROM HUNGARY Southeastern Louisiana University (USA), in collaboration with the Teachers’ Training College of Debrecen, and the World Federation of Hungarians, sponsored a “Sumer Study in Hungary” program this past sumer to provide American students with an opportunity to study Hungarian and the culture of Hungary in its natural environment. Debrecen was selected as the location of the study program because of its climate, its proximity to the major centers of Hungarian culture, its universities, and its superb setting as a historical city. From June 19 to July 23, concerts shared the stage of Miskolc’s Diósgyőr Castle with performances of “Les Petits Riens” by Mozart and “Mike the Magnate” by Albert Szirmai, while the Collegium Musicum offered organ recitals in Avas Church and the “Rock Theater” performed alongside folkloric dancers. In Szeged, between July 20 and August 20, the first national Hungarian opera, “Hunyadi László”, composed in 1844 by Ferenc Erkel, and Gunod’s “Faust” were highlights of the city’s open-air festival. Guest appearances by the Gyor Ballet and the Georgian Folk Ensemble alternated with organ recitals and Kacsoh’s musical drama, “Rákóczi”.
